Male changing room, steam and sauna.
I’ve been a regular customer at Islington tennis center, gym and spa for many years. The gym is very clean. The staff are very nice and friendly. My only problem is the steam and sauna rooms, the sauna and steam rooms are often over crowded. Customers are the ones cleaning the steam and sauna rooms. This should not be. The male changing room is always in a mess and often has an odour.

Avoid this place if you expect fair and equal treatment.
For years me and my football team have used Better facilities every Sunday, booking pitches at Whittington Park and paying to use facilities when needed. Whenever the showers at Whittington weren’t working, we would go to Islington Tennis Centre & Gym and PAY to use the showers as non-members. Never asked for anything for free. Never caused issues.
The problems only ever started with one staff member: Sara.
Every time we dealt with her, there was some new excuse: “£4 to shower.” Then suddenly “£15.” Then “showers aren’t allowed on weekends.”
Strangely, there is no written policy anywhere saying this. Nothing on the website. Nothing displayed in the building. Yet while we were being refused access, other customers were being allowed in without problems.
After a while it became impossible not to notice the pattern. Groups of Black customers were being treated differently, spoken to differently, and refused access under rules that seemed to change depending on who was standing in front of the desk.
It genuinely felt like racial discrimination.
After raising concerns formally about racism, discriminatory treatment and unfair behaviour, the outcome from management was not to properly address the concerns — it was to BAN me and my football team from the centre entirely.
Apparently raising concerns about racial discrimination now makes paying Black customers a “risk.”
No evidence of misconduct was ever provided to us. No explanation for the inconsistent rules or pricing. No proper response to the discrimination concerns either.
Anthony Jarrett, the General Manager, decided the solution was to remove the customers complaining rather than seriously investigate repeated complaints about Sara’s behaviour.
Absolutely disgraceful treatment of long-standing paying customers.
2026 and people are still being made to feel unwelcome because of the colour of their skin. Shameful.

Better gym the best trainer and experience I’ve ever had
I’ve been a rejoined member at Better gym in Market Road since May 2025. Just wanted to say a big thank you to all the staff for being so welcoming, helpful and extremely professional. I am very appreciative to Eddy. I am 73yrs old, he helped me from induction until now. He has worked my fitness with me and my confidence. I’m always thought that I wasn’t capable of pushing weights. Eddy has taught me so much, for an older member of the gym I feel fantastic and it stems from Eddy’s help and training programme. Thank you Eddy 👏👏👏

Great Centre
I come here most mornings and do a 50 minute workout. Really love it. Friendly and very helpful staff. I’ve been given an excellent programme suited to my needs and finding that my physical and mental health has much improved. Well done the Team! I’m very grateful!

A great facility to have
I feel very fortunate to have this great facility closeby. I have used it for 20+ years, and would particularly recommend the quality of the exercise classes - Yoga and Pilates are the ones I attend mostly. The standard of teaching is very high, with tutors catering to everyone's individual needs. It's great to have 6 indoor tennis courts, and again the coaching is also to be commended.

Great gym and tennis facilities
I have used this gym for years, staff on the desk have always been very helpful with any enquiries. Beth one of the fitness instructors in the gym has been very helpful, great knowledge and has helped me achieve some of my fitness goals and helps me stay motivated in the gym. Always answers any questions I have, She runs great classes too always left feeling like had a great workout afterwards. The gym is always tidy and the changing rooms, sauna/steam have had a big improvement on cleanliness. Great gym in the community

I’ve been going to this gym for a while now, and it’s been an amazing experience. The facility is always clean, the equipment is top-notch, and the atmosphere is motivating. We sincerely regret to learn about the difficulties you are encountering while utilising the Better UK App. Please be informed that you may also access the main website should the App not perform as expected during your booking process. We acknowledge the sluggishness of the App at 10 PM each evening, a time when many of our customers are attempting to make reservations simultaneously, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Not so non-profit, terrible customer service
I've been taking tennis lessons at the Islington Tennis Centre since 2021 where membership fees were £59.85/m, since then it's been continuously increasing with the most recent amount at £76.90/m, that's a 30% increase in fees. However, with the increase in fees, one would think you'd see improvements to the courts/centre and or the way things are run at the facilities. However, that is not the case...
the roofs leak during rainy days, the courts are old and you can see cracks on the surface. Court prices have also gone up and is now an outrageous, at £30+ per hour! Last but not least, managing the membership is also a nightmare of an experience in itself. I had asked to freeze my membership for a year due to pregnancy and needed time to recover, while one customer service representative said yes, another said no. They continued to charge me even though I had asked to freeze my membership, and then for them to also not be flexible and insist I can only freeze it for 3 months. All in all I'm quite disappointed with my experience with Better Tennis Centre and it has finally come to the time where I cancel my membership. Better off going private with a friend to split the cost at this point!

I sincerely apologise for any disappointment you have experienced regarding the perceived value of the fees associated with your tennis lessons at the Islington Tennis Centre.
The annual price increase is a necessary measure that reflects the impact of economic inflation. As a charitable social enterprise, any revenue generated is reinvested into the organisation. These funds are utilized for staff training, enhancing our facilities and services, and supporting athletes through the GLL Sports Foundation. Recently, we have introduced the Warm Spaces initiative, providing a safe environment for members of the public to escape the cold, enjoy a cup of coffee, and engage in social interaction.
While I acknowledge that the courts may require refurbishment and that the building's age contributes to issues such as a leaking roof during inclement weather, we do not adjust our membership fees when new facilities are acquired. Members with UK access can benefit from these new centres. We also offer discounted memberships for seniors, individuals on benefits, students, key workers, and customers with registered disabilities, as well as GP referral memberships.
With regard to freezing your membership, we can accommodate such requests for reasons of pregnancy or medical necessity. We are able to freeze your membership for up to twelve months for pregnancy-related reasons and may provide an indefinite freeze for medical reasons, depending on individual circumstances.

Worst managed centre
The staff and community is great here but I've had so many issues with management.
People call this the dirtiest centre in Islington. The changing rooms and toilets are often filthy and the sauna stinks.
Over the years I've complained many times about this but nothing ever changed.
I've complained on several occasions about people bringing in dogs but management have let that happen again and again.
When stuff is broken it takes forever to get fixed or doesn't get fixed at all.
Since May, in the evenings the water often shuts off completely or no warm water is available, leaving customers to go without. Despite many complaints this is still happening this week.
Anti social behaviour is often rife and completely unmonitored.
I've complained to management about all these and other issues but was just given excuses, false promises and even been told there actually is no issue, basically calling me a liar.
I love the centre and it's community but the people supposedly in charge turning my experience increasingly awful.
