Pressure to purchase insurance at pickup
We declined additional insurance multiple times when picking up a rental car from Avant in Split. The employee repeatedly emphasized severe consequences and stated that even minor cosmetic damage would require a police report. When I questioned this, I was told the police could be called.
The situation felt pressuring and intimidating, and I did not experience this as a real choice. I therefore purchased the insurance to end the situation.
The company later rejected my complaint without addressing whether the purchase was made under pressure.

I booked a Volvo XC40 for 4 days. Was offered a double upgrade to a brand new a Audi A6 S. Got an additional discount with child seat rental. The car return went smoothly. We were travelling with our 4-year-old son and by the time of return, the back seat area of the car was messy. They offered a free car interior cleanup too, so I could just leave the car messy. I had excellent experience with the rental.

Vrlo loše iskustvo i čista prijevara. Na internetu je prikazana jedna cijena najma, ali kad dođete na lokaciju, prisiljavaju vas na dodatne troškove koji nigdje nisu jasno navedeni. Ako ih odbijete, ponašanje osoblja postaje neugodno i bezobrazno.
Prilikom ugovaranja nestaje novac pod izlikom “depozita” i raznih izmišljenih stavki. Uz to, stalno prijete dodatnim naplatama – ako se navodno oštete sjedala, ako se osjeti miris dima, čak i bez ikakvog dokaza. Osjećaj je kao da jedva čekaju priliku da vam nešto naplate.
Umjesto profesionalne usluge, dobijete stres, pritisak i strah od dodatnih troškova. Ne preporučujem nikome. Ima puno poštenijih rent-a-car agencija – ovu svakako izbjegnite.

Nicht bei Avant Car im Split mieten. Die Visacard wurde abgelehnt. Es musste eine teure Zusatzversicherung abgeschlossen von 270 EUR. Systematische Abzocke!!! Ärgerlicher Urlaubsbeginn!!!

Avoid, avoid avoid … they are a total scam company. I was with my son in Croatia and we rented from them, initially I tried to set an account up but it didn’t finalise so my son set one up, we rented a car for half a day, it was 100% charged when we took it and still on 80% when we returned it so had no need to charge it. They have since been trying to take £252 out of my account saying that we took a cable from the car! Firstly, we never touched a cable, we had no need to, and also, they have no authority to take the money from me as it was rented in my son’s name on his account. I’ve had to report this to my Monzo account and couldn’t use this card on another recent holiday due to this which was a huge inconvenience and cost me money in charges. When you read the reviews for this company, apparently they are know for this sort of thing so avoid at all costs. This was in Zagreb in Croatia and it seems a common issue with this company. I don't understand how they are repeatedly getting away with conning people. I've blocked them from my card but they try every week to take this money from my account.
Terrible
My experience with Avantcar was unfortunately absolutely terrible. It was my first time renting a car, and I urgently needed to travel from Belgium to Bosnia because my father was in the hospital. When picking up the car, an employee immediately asked if it was my first time renting which I confirmed. I asked him to do an inspection of the car together with me, but he refused because he “had other customers” and told me to wait. Since my father was on his deathbed, I had no time to stay longer.
Following his advice, I only filmed the rims and the interior, because he said that would be sufficient. Later, when I learned that my father had passed away, I had to leave immediately and could not check anything further. The entire process was unprofessional from the start:
They refused to do a joint inspection;
I had to sign the contract before I was even allowed to see the car;
The car was parked in the dark and was completely wet and foggy, making any inspection nearly impossible;
I had paid for a Mercedes GLS, but received a Japanese car of much lower quality.Because I had to stay longer in Bosnia for my father’s funeral, my husband returned the car. An employee came to the vehicle and didn’t inspect the interior, the rims, or the exterior at all. He went straight to the windshield and immediately claimed that the damage there was “new.” My husband had noticed the damage days earlier, but he didn’t know what was listed in the contract and given the circumstances, it clearly wasn’t our priority.They charged me €1,500 for a new windshield, even though in Belgium this normally costs around €150 at most. This clearly shows that this was done deliberately, they checked nothing else but instantly pointed out the exact damage they wanted to charge me for. They claimed to have photos of the car before I rented it, but of course they couldn’t (or wouldn’t) show them. This makes the whole situation even more suspicious and comes across as pure fraud.I will get the money back through insurance, so this review is not about the cost. It is about the way Avantcar deliberately took advantage of my situation. They knew I was in a hurry, that it was my first time renting a car, that I didn’t have time for a full inspection and they exploited that as an opportunity to charge me for pre-existing damage.I will never rent from this company again. The staff were rude, unhelpful, and clearly willing to profit from someone else’s misery.

Très déçue par cette agence de location. Malgré une réservation effectuée et le respect des consignes, l’agence est restée inflexible face à mon problème et n’a montré aucune volonté de trouver une solution. Le service client n’est pas à la hauteur : manque d’écoute, aucune prise en compte de la situation et réponse standardisée. Je ne recommande pas cette agence et ne louerai plus chez eux.

Mieten Sie nicht bei AvantCar
Mieten Sie nicht bei AvantCar. Die DebitCard von Visa wird nicht akzeptiert. Nur nach Abschluss einer überteuerten Zusatzversicherung wird die DebitCard zur Hinterlegung der Kaution akzeptiert. Ich kann nur vor diesem Autovermieter dringend warnen.
Trickery is part of their business
They charged 490 euro for a "scratch" that was already present at pick-up. At pick-up they said it was only dirt, nothing to care about. The car was dirty at pick-up, so not easy to see.

This company is total humbug! When picking up our rental car at Split airport we were asked for a huge deposit. However they couldn't accept Amex, Mastercard debit or cash. To avoid the huge deposit we had to - surprise - buy an extra insurance. At the end we had to pay more than twice the price we had originally already pre-paid.

Sehr unfreundlich! Diese Autovermietung versaut ihre Urlaubserrinerungen. Erst wird natürlich versucht eine Zusatzversicherung aufzuschwatzen. Eine viel zu hohe Kaution von 1400 € für ein Skoda Fabia, die auf der Kreditkarte blockiert wird. Wir mieteten den Wagen in Split Airport, die Übergabe war Abends fast in der Dunkelheit. Da hatte man keine Chance die kleinen Beschädigungen am Auto zu sehen. Unfreundlich, man hat uns aufgefordet, das Auto gewaschen zurück zu geben! Auf die Nachfrage, wo man das Auto zurück gibt, weil wir sehr früh fliegen, kein klarer Antwort bekommen, ein Plan gibt es schon gar nicht. Mietet bloß keine Autos bei dieser Verbrecherbande! Wir hatten bei SIXT nie irgendwelche Probleme gehabt. Finger weg von Avant Car in Kroatien!

AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COSTS - or it will cost you.
Sadly, if you are like me you probably did not choose this hire company yourself. We booked a hire car through Easyjet who are responsible for selecting Avantcar.
Easyjet took a commission to route me to a criminal rental car company. The alarm bells rang on arrival in Split as when collecting the car Avantcar said is €50 to take the car from Split to an Island (we stayed on Brac). We had no choice but pay. It got worse at drop off as Avantcar made false claims that I had scratched the underside of the front bumper. For these tiny scrathes the cost was £603. I refused to pay and told them to call the police, Avantcar refused to call the police and charged my credit card anyway. On return to the UK the and researching Avantcar it is routinely defrauding customers.
The review before this one seem to refer tot he same scratches. I was driving a Suzuki S-Cross with reg ending KJ. Anyone else been charged for scratches to the same car?
Extremely disappointing experience with Avant Car
I rented a vehicle with Avant Car in Zagreb in August 2025. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory:
1. I received a parking fine (DDPK) in Zagreb, which I accepted as my mistake. However, Avant Car charged me an additional €25 “administration fee” on top of the official fine, even though all communication was automated and no extra service was really provided.
2. More importantly, when crossing into Slovenia, I paid extra for cross-border insurance coverage, but Avant Car never informed me about the mandatory road vignette/toll sticker required to drive there. As a result, I was fined by Slovenian authorities. Their customer service later replied that it was “entirely my oversight” and refused any responsibility.
This shows a lack of transparency and poor customer care. A professional rental company should at least warn customers about mandatory national requirements (such as vignettes) when offering cross-border rentals.
Because of this, I will not rent from Avant Car again and cannot recommend them to other travelers.
Tentative d'arnaque
Je viens à Zadar 2 à 3 fois par an, je louais une voiture à chaque fois chez vous et je n'ai jamais eu aucun problème, sauf que aujourd'hui en ramenant le véhicule, une dame fort désagréable commence à faire le tour du véhicule, prenant des photos sous la voiture m'accusant d'avoir rayé de dessous du véhicule et elle voulait que je signe un constat ! Cette pratique n'est pas honnête, je me suis plains à son "chef " qui m'a dit qu'il n'y avait pas de problèmes et qui était mal à l'aise.La prochaine fois j'inspecte la voiture dans les moindre détails avec photos, des excuses aurait été de mise...

Nous avons eu un excellent service de la part de Léo au retour à Zagreb et nous recommandons cette entreprise.
Don't use this company !!
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They are bunch of scammers. They gave me a new car and when I returned it back they found a little scratch on it. I am sure they masked it before and the guy immediately went to the door. This happend because I took insurance online with Rentalcars insurance. Their price are low, and then they try to sell u their ensurance but if you dont take it you get scammed. Then they charged me 490 euro, when I protested the intimidated me and came stand nose to nose and one guy behind me. On Ryanair they had a score of 8.4 but on trustpilot you can see how many people they tricked.
Dont rent here
Dont rent here! First of all: super slow at handover! They litterally talk for 30 min for each costumer in line… waited 1,5 hour with two small kids after a long flight… They make up exstra charges for the places that you want to go too… say that its some kind of tax. Was not legit when I checked with local people. You also have to clean the car inside and outside before end of holiday. Otherwise they charge 25 euro. Stay away!!

Warning about Avantcar – Avoid being scammed
We recently rented a car from Avantcar and had a very bad experience that we want to share so others don’t get tricked the same way.
When we returned the car, the company suddenly claimed we had caused two damages. Luckily, we had filmed the car both at pickup and at drop-off.
• Damage 1: They first tried to charge us, but after we showed video proof from when we picked up the car, they admitted we were not responsible.
• Damage 2: Despite having clear video evidence showing the car was undamaged when we returned it and left the keys in the designated spot at Split Airport, Avantcar still refused to accept it and kept the charge.
We followed their instructions exactly, filmed everything carefully, and still they claimed we were responsible for a damage that was not there when we returned the car.
This feels like a clear attempt to make customers pay for damages they did not cause. We are continuing the case with the Consumer Protection Agency in Croatia, but we want to warn others in advance.
Our advice: If you are considering renting from Avantcar, think twice. If you do, make sure to document everything with photos and videos, or better yet – choose another company.
