Disappointing Experience – Lost Item & No Accountability

I had an extremely disappointing experience with Stony Dry Cleaners and want to share my concerns.

I entrusted them with several items for dry cleaning, and when I went to wear one of my dresses, I realised that the belt was missing. The belt has always been attached to the dress, and I have never removed it. As any reputable dry cleaner should know, belts are typically taken off before cleaning, meaning it was likely separated at their facility and then misplaced.

When I raised this with Stephen, he denied that the dress ever had a belt, stating that their records showed no belt was logged. However, such a record could have been made at any time and does not necessarily reflect the item’s condition upon collection. I also asked whether there was CCTV on the premises to verify what happened, but I was told there was none—something I find concerning, as proper surveillance should be in place to ensure accountability.

What’s most frustrating is the lack of resolution. No apology, no compensation, just denial and dismissiveness. As a paying customer, I expected a more professional service.

I will no longer be using this dry cleaner, and I strongly advise customers to take photographs of their items before handing them over to ensure everything is returned as expected.

I have no intention of using this platform to “air dirty laundry,” but rather to express my genuine disappointment regarding my experience, as is the purpose of customer reviews.

As I previously explained, the reason I did not immediately notice that the belt was missing is that the items were delivered in a plastic bag, and I had no reason to check them at the time. It was only when I went to wear the dress that I realised the belt was no longer attached.

I know I specifically asked you to take extra care with the buttons, but it seems that while you focused on one detail, another was clearly neglected. I understand that your records indicate otherwise, but the reality is that the belt was never removed from the dress while in my possession, and yet it was missing when returned.

Additionally, I find it unnecessary to highlight that this was part of your “4 Items cleaned for £30” service. The price of the service should not determine the level of care taken with customers’ belongings. Whether a service is budget-friendly or premium, I would expect all items to be returned in the condition in which they were received. The issue here is not about pricing but about responsibility for a missing item, which remains unaddressed.

It is disappointing that rather than acknowledging this, the response has been purely defensive. However, I can see that we are unlikely to reach a resolution, so I will leave it at that.

Thank you for your review of the "4 Items cleaned for £30" service we provided to you.

I am sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your experience at Stony Dry Cleaners. We take all customer concerns seriously and always strive to provide a high standard of service.

To clarify, our booking-in procedure involves thoroughly checking all garments upon receipt, documenting any detachable items such as belts, and recording them in our system. In this case, our records showed no belt attached to the dress at the time of collection. Additionally, when you initially we collected your items, you specifically raised concerns about the delicate nature of the buttons on the dress, which led to an extra level of inspection of the garment when processing - including additional protection of the buttons. If a belt had been present, it would have been noted during this process.

We understand that this was frustrating for you, and I did my best to explain our procedures and policies, which are in place to ensure accuracy and accountability. Our Terms & Conditions, which were agreed upon at the time of booking, specify that any missing or damaged items must be reported within 72 hours of collection from shop / delivery to home. Unfortunately, as this was raised over a week later, we were unable to initiate our claims process.

While I appreciate your disappointment, I can assure you that we handled this matter professionally and followed our established procedures. We regret that we could not reach a resolution that met your expectations, but we remain committed to providing reliable and high-quality dry-cleaning services.
