It pays to complain, keep records and use the energy ombudsman as a last resort.

I want to thank Joe Nellist (complaints management) at SSE for sorting out a transfer to EDF and related billing issues on behalf of my son, who has learning disabilities.
Joe became involved because the customer service staff at SSE could not resolve the incorrect meter reads or agree a transfer meter reading.
After two months of texts, emails and phone calls, we have at last a final invoice and agreed meter readings.
Joe was instrumental in getting this issue fixed and I can’t thank him enough.

ABORT Fee for electric cable move

The engineer team came round told me to dig 40 cm around electric cable. On day of cable move they aborted to say that it was not wide enough and marked with spray paint to what it should be. Why not mark the floor first time you came. My builder was there and he started to widen it for a man to stand in. The southern electric engineers were having a good old chat break. My builder had almost finished they said the can not move the cable and appointment will have to be re booked. I have been told to pay an abort fee 180 to then re book appointment. This is unfair my mum is disabled and this company has left us with a trench in the front of the house. I think British gas needs to refer to companies that have the can do attitude rather than won't do. The abort fee will benefit the company but not in the long run for customer service is damaging.

They take incompetence to a new level

This company really should not be in business. I switched to a new business contract 12 months ago, but they only billed me once when I complained after a few months about not getting bills. When I complained again after another 6 months the call centre said it would be fixed - but instead they refunded the previous payment! After I complained again they finally sorted out the billing and billed me for 11 months electricity in one go on the direct debit. Fortunately there was enough in the account. When I tried to transfer to another company, Octopus, in early April I discovered SSE had wrongly configured the National Database which made it impossible for me to transfer to any other provider. Fortunately Octopus explained exactly what was wrong with the database and how to fix it. After getting passed between SSE accounts, billing, metering and others, I finally got someone who seemed to understand the issue and said it would be corrected within 3 working days. That was over 6 weeks ago! I have raised a formal complaint but only had one response with no attempt to progress the work and now they don't bother replying. My only light at the end of the tunnel is that I can raise this with the Ombudsman in 10 days.

Update: don't be fooled by the replies that SSE make which give the impression that they might be doing something. I followed the advice given in their reply and still no contact whatsover from SSE complaints team or any other part of SSE.

Awful beyond words

Awful beyond words. Take forever to answer the phone. Its clear whoever you speak to has no idea what they are saying nor do they care. The bills are exorbitant. Trapped in contracts that are opaque. Bills are like reading Greek and make no sense. How can we possibly be stuck with such shoddy business energy suppliers in GB in 2025? Its no wonder businesses are floundering under costs and incompetence like this. Of course they do nothing to get better and the Regulator does nothing. I'd rather use candle power than SSE Energy ever again.

Avoid at all costs

The worst business energy supplier

The worst business energy supplier. If someting goes wrong then your business is at risk as there is literally no support available. We had an issue with billing and trying to get our of SSE for the last 4 months. Trapped with them through their internal redtape. Please dont go near SSE if you want to run your business smoothly.

The very worst Company for business…

The very worst Company for business energy supply I have ever used.
I inherited the account with SSE Energy Solutions from a previous company director and it has taken just over a year to sort out the many different Invoices and Credit notes, which I have in a large file, there are so many problems with SSE where do I start, in fact there are so many problems there is not enough room here to set it all out.
The beginning.
May 2024 I wrote to them as calling on the phone takes forever and has no resolution, I asked if we can get the muddle of invoices and credits sorted out, no reply.
July 2024 I wrote again this time I received a reply, but no resolution, which at least gave me an E mail address and name to focus on. Not once did they agree that our invoices and credits were all based on estimated meter readings even though I proved this fact with copies of the paperwork and submitting many meter readings, after several months they decided that they would end our conversations with no conclusion apart from I owed them the outstanding balance.
In the end to cut this short I had to take them to the Energy Ombudsman which proved the best thing I could have done, they agreed SSE were not offering the duty of care that is required of them for every customer, so 12 months on, we have just cleared the final invoice after receiving more credit notes and some compensation and switched to a new supplier. I now have to wait for the final invoice with SSE for which I have supplied a meter reading and the new supplier has also received the same reading. I fully expect this will be a complete mess and another battle will ensue, bring it on.
SSE do not seem to care that we are customers and deserve their respect and a professional service.
Personally I have spent hundreds of hours over 12 months on this issue, taking unnecessary time out of my working week to try and sort out something that if run correctly could have been avoided.
My advise to anyone having problems with SSE Energy Solutions is to seek help from the Energy Ombudsman. I am now taking independent legal advice as to whether I can take any action against them for the mishandling of our business energy supply and the stress and anxiety caused to me personally.
An update on the latest mess with this terrible energy supplier.
We received the final bill which was made up of three invoices, 1 dated back 2023 to 2025 which as far as I am concerned had all been paid, I again took them to the Ombudsman and eventually got a credit for part of the bill and a letter of apology from SSE which is meaningless. The very latest is contact via some woman who offered me a payment plan to clear the final amount, she had assumed I could not pay in full. I offered a better payment plan and she could not accept this because she was from some agency, SSE can not even bother to contact me directly.
PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF
Finally it has taken nearly 2 years to sort these people out, our new supplier EON Next have been excellent. the bills are more than half of those from SSE and everything is clear and concise.

Daylight robbery

I have a business i never used gas i call SSE to remove gas meter they said they charge 400 quid for removing gas meter after they sent one guy from SSE he said they shouldn’t charge anything for removing gas meter and he said he send a engineer to take it off no one turned up and they keep sending me bills after bills like scamming me they end up taking it off and sending me 249 quid bill for nothing and I didn’t pay that they raised it to another scammer LCS company to collect 1889 pounds of me?!!!!!
Guys be aware of this scammer

Venkata Pasumarthy [Mani] Helped us…

Venkata Pasumarthy [Mani] Helped us back date our bill for over two months as our energy contract lapsed without us getting any notification meaning we was over paying. He went ABOVE AND BEYOND to get my complaint resolved, resulting in me being credited a significant amount of money that we over paid. No other company I’ve dealt with has been this helpful. We will stay with SSE going forward for all energy supplies. 10/10 customer service. If you have a complaint make sure you go to the complaints department, don’t give up.

After an awful experience, it was handled well.

After an awful experience with SSE billing which lasted three years I was lucky to come across Mani, full name Venkata Pasumarthy in the complex complaints team. This man was so polite, understanding and persistent in dealing with my case that despite many obstacles outside his control he took full control of the complaint and fully resolved it to a more than satisfactory result. I fully recommend Mani for his customer service skills and dedication to his job.

I have been trying to sort out a meter issue for 2 years and I am still receiving bills that are nothing to do with me, multiple phone calls and multiple emails, all to different people and not one of them have sorted it out, I have never dealt with such an incompetent company that obviously does not care about the impact they are having on their customers

SSE - Appalling Company

This is possibly the worst company I have ever dealt with. We bought a church from a private owner in the Scottish Borders. Six months after buying it, SSE broke in to the church and disconnected the electricity for a bill owing by the previous owner. I live 350 miles from the church. After eight month, I finally got SSE to attend the church to restore the power. On the first attempt, they said that they couldn't do anything. On the second, their electrician wasn't able to restore the power because she wasn't qualified! So, after eight months we awaited the Scottish Power people, who were able to restore the electricity (strange that SSE aren't qualified to do that). That means that I had driven a total of 2,100 miles to deal with the issue. The compensation for that, awarded by the Energy Ombudsman was £100 (on Government advised figures of £0.49 per mile, SSE should have paid me at least £1029, not to mention the 42 hours of driving and the three hotel stays required! Finally, we had the power on and I immediately swapped to Octopus in February. I've now received a bill for £70.13, when there has been zero electricity usage since the last bill. I've been told today that the Government sets the standing charges. If that's the case, how is it that Octopus can do it for the same period for £17.00. Don't touch SSE with a barge-pole, they'll fleece you.

Unbelievable customer service from SSE - incompetent, dismissive, slow, unprofessional

We've been trying to obtain a refund on the SSE Business Energy accounts since the contract ended 31/10/2024. SSE agreed the amount of the refund but as in the meantime we had changed bank accounts they requested details of the new account. These were provided by email 11/02/2025 and duly acknowledged 12/02/2025 by SSE as received. They advised that the refund would be in the new account by "the end of the following week" [i.e. 20/02/2025].
I phoned today, 03/04/2025, as we had still not - six weeks later - received the refund (in excess of £5K) to be told that an internal email 19/03/2025 requesting that the bank details be confirmed had not been actioned. At no time was I contacted to confirm details and it was only because I phoned today that SSE claims that the account details were indeed confirmed.

SSE has to be the worst energy provider…

SSE has to be the worst energy provider ever. They have been owing me about £2800 for nearly 16 months now. They never deal with complaints. I took it to Energy Ombudsman who ordered them to sort it and pay me. That was over 6 months ago. SSE you are a disgrace. Sort yourselves out.

Incredible customer service only from Mia-Carla Hussain

This review is only for the incredible customer service I have received from Mia-Carla Hussain.

After months of attempting to rectify issues through my incorrect business energy bills and faulty meter concerns, I have dealt with countless Customer Service Advisors that have done absolutely nothing to help us rectify our issues.

Having just been on the phone with Mia, I find that I have full trust in her, for us to actually make progress in correcting these issues. Her attentiveness to wanting to help me is incredible, to the point where I have felt motivated to write this review. An absolute asset to the customer service team, and the only person that I want ever dealing with any of my concerns in future.

Totally useless company, avoid at all cost

Have just received an invoice for £53,000 for a small rural church in Monmouthshire, bills are usually around £450. Have been trying for past 3 months to get a bill reflecting actual meter readings. Spend hours on the phone and the advisors just get more and more muddled. Filled in their online complaints form and also emailed the complaints management team and after two weeks have not received as much as an acknowledgment. Do not use this company, I would give them a minus score if I could.
