RUTHLESS IF YOU FALL INTO HARDSHIP — DO NOT BE SWAYED BY THE £1 OFFER

I would not recommend Shurgard Romford to anyone in hardship, homelessness, temporary accommodation, or any unstable financial situation. My honest experience is that they are a very ruthless company once you fall behind, even when they know you are trying to protect the full contents of your home.

I stored the contents of a family home with them after becoming homeless and being placed in temporary accommodation with my children. This was not a few boxes — it was household furniture, children’s belongings, important items, appliances and the contents of a home. I was a customer for around 19 months and paid thousands overall, over £5,000 by my calculation.

The £1 offer may look attractive at first, but do not be swayed by it. The ongoing monthly price became extremely expensive. My charge went from around £200, to around £235, then around £285 per month. Be very careful with the small print because prices can increase and it becomes very hard to get out once your household items are inside.

When I fell into hardship, even by days, access could be blocked and I was warned that my belongings could be disposed of. They knew I was in temporary accommodation with children and that the unit contained the full contents of my home. I was not abandoning anything. I was communicating and trying to pay. But the approach felt very cold and unforgiving.

A lot of my correspondence was with Shona, and later Jack. I am not saying anything personal about them, but the handling felt extremely ruthless and without much humility. It felt like there was no real care for a long-term customer or for the circumstances. It was just fees, arrears, access being blocked, notice periods and pressure.

In February 2025, I was told I had to remove my goods after falling behind. I was panicking and trying to borrow money for removals because I did not have the money. Then, shortly before the removal date, Shurgard told me the lifts were out of order and upper-floor access was only through fire escape stairs. They accepted this would likely not be feasible for my removal team because of the size of the unit. Only then was extra time/payment flexibility allowed. That showed me flexibility was possible, but it only seemed to happen because their own lift issue made removal unrealistic.

The lifts being out of order was also a major issue because when you have heavy furniture and a large unit, stair access is not realistic. Downsizing was suggested before as if it was simple, but moving heavy items, large furniture and appliances into another unit would mean paying for removal help again. That is not realistic when you are already in hardship.

Also check the insurance carefully. If you are storing the contents of a full home, basic cover may not be enough. Some of my items became mouldy, discoloured or damaged while stored, including chairs that were important to us.

More recently, after finally moving, I substantially cleared the unit on 9 June 2026. Only the final chairs/items were left because they could not fit in the van. I tried to deal with them responsibly by arranging a British Heart Foundation charity collection. Instead of practical help, I was told access could not be given unless I attended in person, and the focus went straight back to invoices, notice periods and further charges.

It was very upsetting because I was trying to do the right thing and donate usable items rather than waste them. But again, it felt like there was no kindness or flexibility — only charges.

My advice: only use Shurgard if you are completely financially secure and can afford price increases, insurance, notice periods, arrears and removal costs without any risk. If you are in hardship, do not store essential household belongings here unless you fully understand how quickly things can become stressful.

I wish I had chosen another provider.

Mouse infestation destroyed my belongings


I stored the entire contents of my home at Shurgard Romford, trusting that my belongings would be kept in a clean, professionally managed and properly pest-controlled facility.

When I removed everything from storage, I was shocked to discover clear and extensive evidence of mouse infestation inside my unit — droppings throughout, urine contamination, nesting material and significant gnaw damage. Furniture, soft furnishings, clothing and even electrical appliances have been destroyed or rendered unsafe.

This was not minor or isolated damage. It was widespread contamination of my household contents.

These were my personal belongings accumulated over many years, stored while preparing to relocate abroad. The financial loss and distress this has caused has been considerable.

Customers pay substantial monthly fees expecting basic standards of hygiene, maintenance and duty of care. In my experience, those standards were not met.

I would strongly urge anyone considering storing valuable household items here to carry out thorough checks and seek clear assurances about pest control before committing.

Not the unit I reserved online

I reserved a unit online as I wanted to look at the size before I committed to renting it. When I went to view it the unit i was shown was by the lift. After i had decided it was for me and signed up, the unit I was assigned was not the same one. My unit is very far from the lift and the light doesn't work. When I mentioned this I was informed that a working light isn't a necessity as the hallway has light and when you book online you are assigned a random unit even if you have reserved one. The hallway does have light but it's difficult to see to the back of a big unit without a light. I was told a job can be logged with a handyman. Which seems pointless as once the unit is full the handyman will not be able to get to the light!
However both members of staff that I dealt with (Jack and Shona) were delightful. Very helpful and an absolute credit to the company.

Rush Green Stoarage Units

The process of getting a stoarge unit is very straightforward online and access to the unit is very easy once you get there but ensure you have the app downloaded and working as this is the key to quickly opening gates and operating lifts to your unit. Plenty of access for the van we used and access to trolleys & lifts was great (Rush Green Storage Units). Access to the units themselves was fine, corridors wide enough for the trolleys. Feel better my items are stored away safe & secure rather in some garage lock- up so worth paying a bit extra for the peace of mind.

Good customer service

Was surprisingly very straightforward to arrange online, with clear instructions. Shurgard were accommodating when I needed to shift my moving in date forward by a day. It was a Sunday with no staff at my storage site but I was able to go to another site to get the contract amended quickly. As a first-timer it did seem confusing trying to locate my locker as I couldn’t see the corridor signage but got there in the end. Can’t fault the customer service so would recommend!

Have never used self storage before

Have never used self storage before! Found the process quite easy to book online!
Was very confused at first with all the codes to access building and lift!
The young man on reception was excellent very helpful and patient and polite couldn’t do enough to assist me!
Even though he had a difficult customer he was dealing with for ages, was happy to wait until he had finished so he could help me.
What a lovely young man!

Facility is fine, the app however

The facility is fine however, the app to access main gate and doors is a bit hit and miss given the poor mobile phone coverage (O2). Internal doors and lifts can be key coded, but not the externals. I didn’t seem to be the only person struggling that day with this.
