Way better results than using my 20 year set up. Takes a little getting used to proper tensioning and parallel to the stone. Absolutely great for plane blades, even as bad as mine were.

Got the tool, works great
Got the tool, sharpened a chisel and a block plane. Then found out about the diamond plate adapter and the upgraded tool clamp. Ordered those, bigger improvement. Tool is great and with upgraded plate, works fantastic. Block plane is the sharpest it’s ever been and cutting thin long ribbons I’ve ever cut before. One star off for having to upgrade the clamp. Should have been engineered that way from the beginning or at least new ones should just be manufactured with it.

On the clamp, the Upgrade Kit was actually developed in response to customer feedback we'd been collecting over time, so it's something we were already working on.
And on that note, we’re about to release a new version of the SharpMate with the upgraded clamp already built in from the start. The reason we introduced the Upgrade Kit first was to make sure existing customers like yourself had the chance to bring their units up to the same functionality before the new version launched, rather than having to buy a whole new tool.

Very happy with the tools. One question though: What is the little red flag for with the dowel jig?

The little red flag on the dowel jig is used to help turn the blade. The carbide blade is square, which means it has four cutting edges. When one edge becomes dull, simply loosen the blade, rotate it 90 degrees to a fresh edge, and tighten it again.

I was disappointed to see that the…
I was disappointed to see that the angle needed to be set with a hex key. Then the clamp would not hold my chisel firmly in place. Plus the stone was not held firmly in place. Also changing to a different height stone meant finding the hex key to make the angle adjustment. It seems like a great concept, just not well implemented IMO.

On the Hex key adjustment:
We understand this can feel like an extra step. The reason we use an Allen screw is to keep the angle arm firmly locked in place during sharpening. This ensures the angle doesn’t shift under pressure, helping you get consistent and repeatable results. While tool-free adjustments may feel quicker, they can sometimes move during use, which affects accuracy.
On switching between different stone heights:
You’re right to notice the change, but the sharpening angle itself does not need to be adjusted when using different stones. The angle stays the same. What changes is the clamp position; simply moving the blade clamp to the appropriate hole ensures proper contact with the stone. It’s a small adjustment designed to keep the system precise across different setups.
On the chisel, not holding firmly:
We also want to share a quick tip on hand placement, as it can make a big difference in stability and control:
Hold the blade holder with both hands
Use your thumbs behind the holder to guide the motion
Place your index fingers close to the stone contact point
For wider chisels, you can also use your middle fingers for added support
This helps ensure smooth, controlled sharpening with consistent contact on the stone.

I installed a mahogany deck and plugged the screws with plugs. They protruded about a 1/16” and I used your tool to shave them flush. It worked far better than excepted. Love the tool and would recommend it highly!! Thanks
