I have to admit that I was reluctant to use AI, because with all the "larger" companies, I had always the feeling that they just want to take my data and make money out of it. And if you wanted something done, you had to throw money at them in addition to your data. I only wanted an AI that would help me with some personal tasks (i.e. bring some order into my music collection, help me to manage my smart home (home assistant).
I was already thinking about setting up a dedicated machine for myself when I stumbled upon rool.dev. And I was very positively surprised what you can already do with the free plan. And even if you need a bit more credits, because something turns out to be a bit more complicated, you just buy a voucher for a few Euros and have plenty of credits to get things done.

I really like that it is hosted in Europe and your data stays within your machine. Just what I needed.

My music collection is now properly ordered and tagged. rool provided me with the programs to keep it that way. It helped me solving some annoying issues with my home assistant and now I am working with it to create a control for my solar battery. And I subscribed to the PLUS plan now, because I have several more ideas that I would like to tinker with...

Non-US. Private machine.
Been using rool for a variety of things over the last couple of months. Works great. Of course there are quirks and annoyances, but this is expected for a young company, and I am confident that the team will sort them out. 5/5! I just hope they keep their identity and dont sell out to a US corp or to US money.

it started like "hey, it could work, for real", related to a specific goal (building a big meta-catalog of products of almost 100 brands). now I am building it, optimizing it everyday, and see it growing. another VM - set as my personal assistant. kind of agentic. Casper is great, I guess the Team cannot be different: thank you Guys! if you love the idea to "build your with your AI", this is a great tool. try to make it your personal knowledge manager - it'll surprise you (a tip: "related insights" among objects...)

I'm an author of historical fiction, and the work I do is the kind that can't be redone if it's misused. So when I started looking at AI tools, my questions were never "which one is cleverest?" They were: Where does my work live? Who can see it? Could my characters and prose end up inside a shared model?
Rool answered those questions in a way I haven't found anywhere else. Each Rool Machine is a genuinely private virtual computer: my files, manuscripts, and conversations are stored inside my own isolated machine, hosted in the EU, and never shared with other users, never sold, and never used for advertising. I can export the entire machine at any time, which matters enormously to someone who keeps her life's work in one place. The standard plan is free forever, which meant I could try it without any pressure.
It's not perfect!
The fine print says Rool may use machine content to improve its own products, so I keep my final manuscripts in my own offline vault and treat the machine as a workspace rather than a vault. That's a trade-off I'm comfortable with, and the company was transparent enough for me to see it clearly.
If you're a writer who has been holding your work close to your chest, wondering if an AI will ever be safe to trust: thlis is the closest thing I've found.

So far I'm blown away by what this startup is doing, it so far has not only been an amazing AI tool but the support and interaction from the team is nothing short of amazing as well. I love the fact that this is my own personal LLM VM without having to spend the money to run my own at home. The privacy policies are superb and I love that the datacenter is housed in a country that cares about sustainability and privacy. I can't recommend their service enough and so far have been really pleased.

I made two Rool machines so far and both are doing a great job at helping me with my photography and - professionally - with my education job.

I have been AI neutral to AI adverse from the moment Dall-E started taking off. I have seen what started as seemingly innocent use to generate funny images turn into what it is today which initially made me hesitant to integrate any sort of AI in my day to day life. I had bouts of using chatgpt to gemini with little to no staying power until I found out about Rool.

Rool makes sense to me because they explain what it is so plainly and also the integration of having an AI live in a virtual machine is not something I have seen in the other models. I greatly appreciate how easy they make it for me to delete my data if I need to and how they value my privacy. It was super important to me to see that the data I was using would stay my data. I have only been using the free tier since I am usually a hands-off person with AI integration but rool has helped me meaningfully integrate some AI usage in my life that seems useful and not in a way that has me give up all my personal information to train yet ANOTHER LLM. I don’t have to worry about getting a neutered version of an AI like other free tiers nor do I have to worry about which AI I should use because Rool automatically optimizes for that.

I think at the end of the day I want to hammer home that Rool is free to try, easy to use and the free version is quite good in giving you a taste of how to use it! And if you don’t like it deleting your stuff is easy as pie!

The AI doesn't spy on you so the big corp can sell your data. It's legit stuff, really helpful, and actually remembers everything

Also the team is very nice!

I'm using Rool to keep track of my workout, and to motivate myself when I need it. Because it remembers everything, I can easily ask Rool to, for example, add a set to a particular exercice. It's very easy and helpful, it genuily feels like the AI is listening when I ask it to change its behaviour. Great tool!

It solved, in less than an hour, a problem that had been bugging me and every other LLM for months.

I'll be subscribing.
