I am a disabled biker who only held a provisional license at the time of the accident that left me with life changing injuries that was not my fault.

Phoenix really helped and supported me through the entire licensing process so i was able to achieve my full license for my adapted Can-Am Spyder.

I would recommend Phoenix to anyone with a disability who wants to learn how to ride.

Thank you Phoenix for all your help.

Great instructors

Great instructors. Chris and Ashley were very supportive and focussed. My son had a great experience and passed his CBT under their care. Thanks so much from booking through to passing, great communication and organisation.👍

Bad tempered instructor

I don’t expect to receive a sensible reply or investigation to my review as responses are written by the staff of the instructor.

On my first day, the lowered bike I requested was not available and I was encouraged to swap to a scooter. During the training, the owner Mark repeatedly snapped at me and when I tried to explain that his technique wasn’t helping me pick it up, he stormed off. However another date was offered so that I could try again on a lowered bike as I wasn’t picking up the scooter fast enough.

On arrival on the 2nd date, Mark’s son Ashley explained that Mark “was a bit fire-y last time because of the mix-up”. Luckily, I had been practicing on my own bike previously as no instruction was given about gears and Mark was in his phone half the time - no doubt dealing with business issues. On the road, Mark became impatient and short tempered again, literally shouting at me while riding for errors like turning an indicator off or road positioning despite making the turns without being too close to the road markings or other traffic. He cut the ride short despite saying that I need more practise, because he was frustrated and irritated.

Barring a near miss or a perceived danger, there is absolutely no reason to be shouting at customers whilst in the road.

Thank you for taking the time to review our Canterbury school. We understand not passing your CBT can be frustrating, and we apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused.

The safety of our students is always our top priority throughout training, particularly when riding on public roads. Low-speed riding on major roads, forgetting to cancel indicators or make left observations when turning right, incorrect positioning, and overly wide turns put riders at a high risk of accidents and incidents with other road users.

We apologise if our instructor's concern for your safety was misinterpreted as anger or impatience. We have spoken to our instructors about their use of tone and volume with new students.

We believe that our recommendation for practice with an automatic motorcycle or scooter will help you gain confidence on two wheels faster. Our offer of a reduced-price CBT for additional off-road training and a repeat road ride will help you succeed on your next CBT attempt. We would love to help you gain the freedom of two wheels and learn to ride the manual sports bike your partner has purchased for you!

Avoid the Canterbury Phoenix training school!

Avoid the Canterbury, Kent, Phoenix training school!
Positives- one of the instructors, Ashley, was friendly and patient.
Negatives- the ‘head Instructor’ Mark was rude, arrogant, and actually shouted at my partner (she’s 44, not a teenager). Awful bedside manner; he’s probably an excellent rider (trains police and advanced riding) but he’s an awful teacher. He had no patience for my partner who got nervous when he shouted.
It also turns out that Mark is Ashley’s dad, so even when Ashley was pleased with my partners progress and looked like he wanted her to pass the CBT, Mark overruled and Ashley was powerless to challenge his father.
In addition, my partner attempted the CBT on two occasions- the first time she booked a low height bike as she’s short, they messed up and didn’t provide it as it was out elsewhere and Mark got angry trying to blame us for not checking our email confirmation, even though it was their error. Mark tried to make my partner use an automatic scooter instead, which is no use to us because she has a geared motorbike at home that they she needs to be able to ride.
In fact, when I have taught her myself in a carpark, she rides and manoeuvres her bike excellently, well above beginner standards, but at the CBT Mark’s angry teaching methods made her nervous and put her off. So they cancelled her CBT and sent her home.
In fairness to them, they provided the second CBT date at no extra charge, and this time with the correct low-seated geared motorbike, but once again Mark was rude and angry and impatient. He never once taught her how to ride or change gear, so it’s lucky I had already taught her, instead he just told her to do stuff and then shouted when he didn’t like the way she’d done it, instead of doing what good instructors do which is to actually show what they want and help you practice it.
Ultimately, Mark refused to issue the CBT pass because my partner failed on just two things- leaving the indicator on after some turns, and taking left turns a little wide (but she never crossed the white line), both things easily corrected with patient teaching and practice, but instead of doing that he cut the day short by over an hour saying that she’d never get it and should go for a scooter instead, wanting her to book a third CBT, on a scooter, and of course pay another £180. No thank you, we’ll go elsewhere.
The saying ‘there’s no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teacher’ is extremely apt here. Avoid Phoenix Canterbury, unless you can guarantee you’ll get Ashley and Mark won’t be around…

Thank you for taking the time to review Phoenix and we are sorry that your partner wasn't successful on her CBT. Having discussed this with two instructors and reviewed the CCTV footage of the training area and road ride, we would like to make some additional comments some of the points raised.

As you rightly pointed out, there was a mix up of the bikes requested on the initial booking. It was originally requested as a lowered scooter, but then changed by your partner to a manual bike. However, the lowered part of the request was not transferred so there was no lowered bike available on the original day. We gave your partner a choice of coming back another day or processing on that day with a scooter to give her some experience as she is not currently a car driver, and she decided to do that as the only manual bike there was to tall for her and would not have been safe. At the end of the first session her standard was not sufficient to take her out on the road, and due to the mix up at the beginning, as you alluded to, we offered her a free of charge second session when we would have the lowered bike for her.

She started off on the training pad on the manual bike on the second session, but it did take a number of repartitions of each exercise to successfully reach the required standard. This can be seen on the CCTV but there is no voice capture of the discussions. She was taught to complete the exercises in the correct sequence, which is in contradiction to your comments, and suitable encouragement given when she competed these exercises and after the end of element C, she was at a consistent standard deemed to safe to go out on the road. Once out on the road, progress was slow to start with, as is to be expected from a new rider, and it did improve slightly. After about 45 minutes, having not left the nursery roads, progress seemed to have stalled as they didn't get above 10-15 mph, which puts riders in danger from other road users, The cancelling of her indicators was an issue and to the instructor's memory, not once did she cancel them without being asked to do so, despite his efforts to get this into a sequence. There were also a number of right turns (minor into Major) where no left observations were done before pulling out, which had there been a vehicle coming, would have been a serious issue. The instructor did stop the road ride at this point and explain the serious nature of this. This was taken on board as the error wasn't then repeated. After nearly an hour and a half, and following no further progress, the instructor decided that with her current level of riding, she would not be safe to continue the road ride and nor would she have been at a sufficient level to have been issued with the CBT certificate without some more training. It was suggested that when she returned, she should continue on an automatic bike, which would have given her the opportunity to understand positioning and gain experience and deal with traffic on the road without the worry of changing gear, which would allow to confidently convert to the manual bike at a later date. She was not asked to pay another £180 as she didn't need to complete the whole CBT, only an hour's additional training followed by the road ride again.

At Phoenix, we pride ourselves in upholding the standards set by the DVSA when issuing CBT certificate and will not issue them to anyone we feel would be a danger to themselves or other road users. This was the case with your partner.

Would recommend

Great experience and ended up having a one to one CBT session with the instructor. Went for a renewal so was very relaxed, went through all the stages and had a nice ride throughout the Kent countryside. Instructor went through everything easily and the new bike was a great ride.. much smoother than my own bike. Will be going back to do my full license at some point, thanks!
