Today I spoke with Pear Tree to follow up on a job application. I appreciate that the job market is challenging at the moment, and I don’t doubt recruiters are under pressure too, but I was disappointed by how the conversation went and left the call feeling quite upset.

I understand that a lengthy gap in employment needs some explanation, but moving straight to questioning it, without first discussing the applicant’s experience, comes across as judgement and results in a negative experience for the candidate. They asked where I had travelled and said employers would ask for proof of this, via me submitting a passport and other travel documents. This felt like instant distrust of what I had told them, and it was also unnecessary as they had not yet put my CV forward to an employer. I have never heard of employers requesting this in the past, particularly for the kind of roles I work in, which don’t usually require strict security clearance. All of this felt like being questioned rather than supported.

As the role had been filled, I asked whether there were other suitable jobs available. They immediately said I wouldn’t want those roles because they weren’t what I was looking for, which felt like the decision was being made for me rather than with me.

I was also told that “other candidates don’t have gaps in their CVs, and the job market is tough at the moment, so...” which gave me little hope that any future applications would be considered either.

I wanted to share this feedback in the hope that candidates can be treated with a little more consideration and respect in future.

Jo has been amazing!! She’s very friendly and made me feel comfortable. She kept me updated throughout the whole process. Also spoke to Glen just before my interview and he was lovely and very detailed in the whole interview process so you just knew what to expect. Thank you all!!

In my experience a helpful, friendly and highly effective team. Far superior to other companies with regards to communication and support, others don’t contact you when they say will call or don’t reply to messages but I didn’t find this the case with Pear Tree. Jo and Glen who helped me were both available when needed and happy to assist with both applications and prep for interviews. Would be very happy to go back to them if needed in the future.
