Movers did a really good job… office staff was very nice

Wow, they somehow were able to remove my first review. This is a scam company! Trust Pilot, please contact me and I will provide all the receipts. This company quoted us 6k for our move from California to Oregon. They never told us they would be hiring sub contractors. The sub contractors they hired were unprofessional and most of them were undocumented getting paid pennies to do the work. Upon the arrival of the sub contractors they told us we are looking at $14k when all of our things had been moved downstairs of our 28th floor high rise and told us they would leave all of it down there if we didn’t sign the contract and agree. No one at Northern was picking up the phone, they were dodging us. After our furniture had been delivered and $1000 in damage had been done, they turned us over to a “resolution” company that is also a scam, is not licensed, no website, and every time I would leave a review he would call me and threaten me. The last time he said and I have proof of this, each time you leave a review they will have more good reviews that will flood your 1 star review and it won’t matter. I have photos, receipts and a huge folder to prove this. Most of the 5 star reviews on here are super fake! There is so much more to what I am saying. This experience caused us financial hardship and extreme stress, no one at that company has a moral compass. They are all heartless and all out to get your money. DO NOT FALL FOR THEM. They ARE A HUGE SCAM!

Very frustrating. I generally don’t provide negative reviews but in this case I’m making an exception. I called and was very clear I needed my stuff on either the 19th or 20th. Was told by Michael it wouldn’t be a problem. Was sent docs to sign stating it could take up to 2 weeks from first available delivery date after I paid 50% deposit but was again reassured it wouldn’t be a problem. I also specifically asked if this was the actual moving company and not a broker. Mike said it was. Well they turned our job over to another company called All Moving Relocation who basically washed their hands of everything we were told. Several calls to Mike at Northern were ignored. At this point we were dealing with All Moving We also added a few small things after we contracted and the claimed the stuff would take up so much space on the truck and charged us an extra $500 over the initial quote. And since they charge based n how much space you have no way of actually knowing if you’re being overcharged. The original quote was $2500 and the stuff we added was nowhere near 20% of the stuff originally quoted for but you have no choice but to pay at that point. The worst was that as of Friday the 18th afternoon they still couldn’t confirm when my stuff would be delivered. Definitely not the 19th maybe the 20th or 21st. This required us to rent a hotel room at $350 a night for 2 nights and take off work. We didn’t get confirmation of when the delivery would be until the 19th. Then was told it would be the next day. And of course several calls to Northern were ignored. This was a horrible frustrating experience. The only positive thing is that the stuff was actually delivered on the 20th in tact and the actual moving men were very nice. But shame n All Moving for stringing us along and not committing to a delivery date until the night before and shame on Northern for saying they weren’t a broker when they were and overcharging us for the few extra things and the horrible service after they got their money.

Do not hire them. They are liars. Stressful experience. Total waste of money

On my first chat with Northern, I spoke with a thoughtful, well-informed representative named Michael who laid out the steps for the move, and who coordinated my chats with other team members to estimate my costs and the size of truck I would need, etc. I got off the call confident that I understood how the move would go.
When the movers showed up, their estimate was higher than what I was expecting, and I was told I needed to pay in cash, which I also had not been told. Since my work was paying for my move, I had planned to put everything on credit cards, and now I needed to find $3k to proceed.
The pack was pretty fast and went fine besides that.
About a week later, my stuff shows up with some new guys. They didn't get the memo about assembling my pieces on delivery. They informed me that I needed to pay extra because of the distance my unit was from the truck, which I had been prepared for. They then let me know there was ANOTHER charge for the use of an elevator (?), which I had not been told.
Needless to say, we blew through the estimate that I was initially given, so the first thing I had to do was explain to my new company that I had spent lots more than the budget.
I understand that everything in modern business is sub contracting and sub sub contracting, but this resulted in a stressful move where nothing worked out quite like I expected.

The movers are professional and the move was handled well enough but imagine getting quoted for a one bedroom and all that it entails, getting told in a different call that we need to add some items - common to any apartment, like lamps and mirrors and getting an additional almost 100% of the original quote. I do understand some additional costs but 100% is wild. It’s a 760 sq ft bedroom not a mansion.
Just be aware - read the fine print and ask for details on square footage, weight all of it.
Would have used the service again but just not good enough with pricing and the low low ball initial quote

Risposta di Northern Moving Systems
High pressure sales. Underquoted the move over the phone and then subcontracted out the packout and move to Green Planet Movers who recalculated the quoted moving price after all of my goods were already on the truck to a price that was 50% higher than what was originally quoted.
When the truck was to arrive, the driver told me that they were coming a day earlier than expected so I moved the delivery from its original residential delivery address to a storage facility in an industrial area closer to my office so that I could accomodate the earlier delivery schedule. The driver then tells me from the road that the truck wont fit in the new space (a space he's never seen or been to - a space that is in an INDUSTRIAL AREA!!!) and that they will have to charge me unloading, repacking and short haul trucking fees. How did they expect to fit into the residential area in the first place? I started to see that this whole thing was a scam. Charge more at packout - because my stuff takes up so much more space (they essentially packed like 3 items per box so of course that means MORE BOXES!), and charge more at delivery - because the truck doesn't fit. But in this case, how the heck does a truck not fit in an industrial area?! I was able to 'win' on this front and they conceded that their truck did actually fit near the storage units door but that they would have to walk an extra 70 feet to my locker - so I had to pay for the extra 70 feet. Better than paying the extra thousands they were trying to get out of me, but they got their pound of flesh in the end (read on!)
At the time of the load-up and signing of the contract, I EXPLICITLY told the customer support team on the phone to charge ALL the charges to my credit card at the time of the packout and load. I didnt want to deal with these people any more, I wanted to be over with it, but when the goods arrived, at 4:30pm on a Friday night, Green Planet Movers would not release my goods to me unless I gave them $2500 CASH. They refused to accept and/or charge my credit card. I was told in no uncertain terms if I wasn't able to find $2500 cash to offload my goods (at 4:30pm on a Friday night) they would charge me $1500 for a redelivery. Complete nightmare situation. Lesson learned. The price over the phone was way too good to be true. It cost me not only money, but extreme distress, worry and aggravation and hours of my time on the phone trying to reach someone in customer support to help me, running around trying to scrape up the cash to release my goods. Horrible horrible experience.
I have read the other reviews where they say they are not brokers, but when I was on the phone with Northern's customer support person trying to get help with the $2500 extortion situation, the guy very clearly said to me "I can't help you because we are a broker"
So, it seems like they are a carrier when it suits them but then a broker when its time to evade responsibility. Convenient.
There seems to be a lot more details in the negative reviews than in the positive ones, so I think that might also be a sign that the positive ones might not be so 'genuine' ... TrustPilot - please take a look at those.
-----------------------------
As a follow on to this review... the company hired a 'fake' mediator to harass me into taking my post down under the guise of mediating a claim to get me my money back. The mediator claims to have found my information through my IP address through TrustPilot. I have reached out to TrustPilot directly to confirm if they share their users IP addresses with companies, but they have not replied. Regardless, all Northern needed to do was look at the dates of service an my complaint and know who I was. They also threatened my job - and threatened to report my review to my professional licensing board. Which I hope they do because as I have been slowly unpacking my things I have found boxes of destroyed and broken items because they were packed so poorly (by these so called "professional movers") Four massive clay pots they just stacked into each other - with no padding or bubble wrap (about $600 worth - all broken into pieces) They packed an antique mirror with zero paper or bubble wrap and jammed into a wardrobe box with shop vac and a blanket. Huge boxes were used to pack just 2 or 3 items with little proper padding in them so the boxes were got crushed in the move. (remember, more boxes take up more space in the truck - which means more $$ for them!) I would love to post photos of here so that folks can see all of my broken things, the crushed boxes, and how unprofessional the packing was ... So please NorthernMovers, please do report me to my professional licensing board - it will give me a yet another chance to expose you and your business practices for what they are.

Terrible experience. The whole situation was ridiculous. First movers show up and say they aren't delivering my stuff for 3 days (it was less than a 200 mile move, I was promised same day) so it was hours of back and forth with the different companies. Yes companies because they contracted it out to Prudential Vans (and tried to tell me they're the same company). I did a virtual tour and yet there were arguments about the list and size of items and the move cost $562 more than the quote. Which was more than other companies quoted. I was promised white glove service, but my couch cushions and pillows were simply taped and tossed in the truck. We had to disassemble furniture because they didn't know how.
Movers were rude.
They'll sell you a good story and then take advantage of you when you're in a bind at the last minute.
Edited 5/26/26: response to vendor: the sales rep did a virtual walk through and quoted same day. Never would I have agreed to a 1-3 day delivery at the price I paid when I had an 8 month old. I also would have prepped for days without belongings seeing as so had a baby. Sales rep was also Given measurements of bins that we were then told were bigger than quoted. This was over a year ago and I was told you would love to resolve this but never received a response when I reached out.

Mistakenly deleted previous review.
Don’t trust sales. Don’t trust this company.
2 weeks since I arrived and my items have not even shipped…
Sales and QA are either misinformed or will blatantly lie.
I booked the move 3 months in advanced. I was told that my stuff would arrive as close to my first available date. Not true. After giving a deposit and paying the local movers, they then tell me it’s 15-21 days AFTER the first available date. I even pushed back this first available date because I thought it would be important to be honest with them.
Second they will try to charge beyond the quote. The sales rep left me with the impression when I booked 3 months in advance I was booking 1 of several sizes. It wasn’t until QA called that I found out it was based on total dimensions. We did an inventory and they tried to charge me almost $2k additional. I ended up selling most of my things, and getting it down to $500 additional. Only to have the movers show up and without moving a single box (and after taking a dump in my bathroom) they told me they would have to charge me extra.
I was told by the sales rep I could cancel and have my deposit returned within 1 week of the move. Then spent hours on the phone with QA because frankly I didn’t budget around a $2k increase. When I asked QA for an exception to issue a refund so that I could make other arrangement, because they didn’t call me until the Monday before, he said “oh we don’t do refunds after the deposit is made.”
So I’m in a stuck situation. They could charge me whatever they wanted or I would lose $2k.
I spent hours in the phone with the director of operations the day the movers showed up. To her credit she was able to accept the items without any additional charge.
Then I get an inventory, they marked 2 BRAND NEW couches and arm chairs as “soiled” and 2 brand new and still wrapped end tables as “SCRATCHED” they were literally wrapped in moving wrap from when I purchased them. I had not used them. One couch was wrapped until the day the movers arrived. With some benefit of the doubt, I do have a dog and one couch was particularly hairy. But I vacuumed and used my bissel on it the night before.
I spoke with condor moving (the company than picked up). They informed me Northern Moving Systems is a broker not a carrier. They appear to be misrepresenting themselves, I would not have hired a broker had I known.
The biggest problem is I just never got the same information from each person. So the sales rep would say one thing, then there may be an email that says the true thing, then I speak to QA who says another. I don’t know who to trust. The customer service rep told me today “you should have looked at your contract.” It felt like she was saying “you can’t trust our employees, you can only trust our paperwork.” Realistically, most things I could have planned around. But I didn’t find out any of this until a week before I was supposed to move. Quite literally lost my apartments deposit because the landlord still had to toss all my left over furniture and boxes. Because I didn’t have time to plan around leaving a bunch of stuff.
Their customer service department was the only positive about this company. They were honest and supportive. But that could not save my experience. Had they been the ones to sell the services I probably would have had a better experience.
Want to reiterate. The thing that bothered me is that I did not find out any of the correct information until it was too late. My deposit had been paid. The movers were scheduled. Etc. I may have received things in email, but it was different information on the phone. Had I received the same information from everyone, I could have planned around this. I’m not unreasonable. I understand how things take time. I understand that furniture has to all fit on a truck. I would not have been disappointed had they just said “yeah we won’t know a realistic price until the he movers show up.” Or “just tell me first available is ASAP.” But because I was made to believe this would be easier than it was, I had a horrible experience. It felt like the rug was constantly being pulled from under me.
Edit: Northern had a mediator who claimed to be with Transport Resolutions Group. Threatening to sue for defamation as a result of my review.
Edit: The delivery arrived today. Boxes were crushed. My $200 mattress topper was ripped in half. My couch legs were broken off. Only one mover. I had to help the mover with large items. Customer service cannot give me additional information. No one has sent the claims review process at this point. I have to speak with the director of operations or legal because David Lee claimed I was looking for a refund
I have filed a complaint with FMSCA. I have written documents claiming Condor was hired by a broker. My contract stating Northern is a carrier. The reply stating they are a carrier.

I can not write enough to stress how terrible this company is. To be fair: I did not do a lot of research in advance. Just wanted to get the move booked. They shook me down for more money though I vehemently disputed I had more inventory that provided to them. I was shipping a piano and disclosed up front: they driver, apparently a Pack and Go sub-contractor, literally threatened me with destruction of property if I did not pay him an additional $500 to wrap the piano in cardboard. The wrapping fee was not quoted up front. I never received an inventory of items and the driver drove over a tree in my yard because he was literally smoking weed. The day before delivery I received a text from the Pack and Go subcontractors to ask what the address was for delivery as it had not been provided to them. I begged for a list of items at this time and asked for the "manifest." I kid you not: the team did not know what that word meant. I am so regretful. My items have not arrived and there is literally zero chance I will be able to confirm what was actually shipped and claim insurance for the items the driver literally warned me: "your items will get lost." I will dispute with my credit card company the charges and never forget this miserable experience.

Northern Moving Systems was not a pleasant experience to deal with, but I was scarce for options so I went with them to move a 1-bedroom load from MA to CA.
Their salesperson was quite curt on the phone, but wasn't too big of a deal to me. He was able to get my order ready and build an inventory list.
The movers they sent to both pickup and delivery were not personable and came off as rude in my opinion. The move itself was extended as they provided no real updates and they missed their delivery window. The dispatcher, while very nice, responded selectively to my messages unless I called. This got quite frustrating towards the end as I was not given any information about where my stuff was. This also meant that I had to scramble to arrange the loading dock the day before they were to deliver my stuff, advance notice was not given. Also, Northern Moving Systems loves to stick the language on their contracts. My stuff was picked up, but they only consider items late past their arbitrary delivery window (to be clear, I asked for the earliest delivery window possible and they began counting the expected delivery date past that delivery window.)
Ultimately, my stuff was received more than a month after it was picked up, compared to the 7-21 business days estimate I was given. The cherry on top was the "Shuttle Fee" the driver charged me at the end of the delivery. To my understanding this is at the discretion of the driver, but it seems to just be a hidden fee written into the contract. The language of the contract says that it is for getting shipments to the location if it is not possible to get a truck to the apartment. I think Northern Moving Systems keeps this language intentionally vague. I was able to provide a clear loading dock and unobstructed elevator access for their truck but I was still charged this fee for some reason.
Overall, I'd recommend using a different company for a cross-country move and avoid this company. They operate off the language of their contracts and provide no leniency or true customer service (in my opinion).
My stuff is mostly not damaged, some boxes are crumpled, and one is covered in an oily substance from an unknown source. (The movers brought in a box of tools that was not mine that I suspect contained either a busted can of WD-40 or some oil. The mover then clarified that it wasn't actually my box and then took it back to the truck.)
---
Edit after their reply: AFAIK they have not engaged me through email, text, or call. Hopefully their tone and content of response give you an idea of whom you are dealing with.
Another edit: They've deleted their old comment with a rude response and added the boilerplate you see below now. More than 2 years after.

Be very careful with dealing with this mover. They will give you a lowball quote and then on the day of pickup, they will bump up the price likey crazy, you don't want on the day of pickup because you would have been already stressed out due to all the packing and putting stuff into the boxes. This happened to me.
Second, they agreed to accept credit card payment method but later they gave me all the hardtime to squizze out cash from me. I was running low on cash due to my house purchase and etc but it doesn't matter.
They will use all their legal docuemnts ( nobody reads this) languge to get you. I had a terrible experience with this company. I wish I would have picked a different company.

This is a scam. Look elsewhere. These aren’t movers, they are brokers. They just hire other movers to move your stuff. They will quote you a super low price, even re confirm it several times, and then you will find yourself in the hole much more than you were quoted. I had them inspect the amount of stuff I had twice and they were off by over 2 times. I was quoted $3500 and am not going to be paying over $6k. Don’t be me and go elsewhere.
