This company should be ashamed of their practices.
Holiday booked for within next 6 weeks and rightly following Government Advice not allowing you to go to the cottage BUT they will not refund!!!
Disgraceful...they are trying to get you to amend your booking or cancel so that they can keep your money...and if you don’t want to do that then they will keep all your money.
Modern day thieves profiteering from this terrible national emergency.
Be ashamed at steeling people’s hard earned money.
Had to change holiday dates due to the…
Had to change holiday dates due to the virus as we were ment to be going 24th April, received an email saying if our date change was more than what we've paid then we would have to pay the difference, but we've paid £480 in one go, our date change holiday is £405 a difference of £75, but been told we will not be getting the £75 back we would loose that!!! & cause we oaid it in a lump sum last year if we cancel it we would loose all our money!!! It's not fair that we are loosing out, £75 is a lot of money for us as my husband is the only wage earner in the house, as I have a disability, after the Sept holiday we will not be booking with these again, we are disgusted the way we will be out if pocket, but if the holiday was more we would have to pay the difference, something wrong here!!!!! Not a happy customer at all.very disappointed.
Will never ever book with this company…
Will never ever book with this company again. We stay in the UK especially Wales regularly and after a stay at one of their properties we were accused of leaving the property in a poor state and leaving dog urine and poo in the property .
We contested everything we were accused of, a lot of what was said was not even possible . The company did absolutely nothing to back us up as customers, they did not answer our questions, or in anyway stay impartial. In there mind the owners were right, no discussion. We have never ever been accused of the things we were at this property, and most of our security deposit was withheld. Basically menai holidays care about money not the customers or the customers holiday or feelings, do not book as you don't know what you are getting or getting thrown back at you when you leave there properties. Would give 0 out of 5 if I could
Stay Well Away from this Company!!
The description of the route to the cottage was extremely economical in the truth department. The cottage was filthy! We took photographs and sent them to it.
They would not take any responsibility whatsoever and eventually sent a cleaner.
We could not stay in the hovel and they did nothing to try and find us somewhere else to stay.
This occurred on the Saturday and it is now Monday. We received an email late yesterday to say that they would do nothing!!
Not as advertised, dirty, unsafe and smelly cottage, with limited views and not easily accessible to shoreline as claimed.
We stayed with Menai cottages last year at Mon a Menai. The cottage was very dirty and smelt really badly. So much so, we resorted to sitting in the kitchen, the only updated and reasonably clean room in the cottage. The carpet was off the runners, leaving nails exposed, the settee was filthy and smelt, covered in dog hair and dirt. The windows covered in dog paw marks. The towels were by no means fluffy or new. Rusty pipes in bathroom leaking with cake tin underneath and a 1970's pink bathroom which needs updating. Toilet mat which upon lifting exposed an extremely stained and smelly carpet.
We were told that the cottage was easily accessible to the shoreline. It was not. It involved going up a two steep roads, up to the main road, walking along it and then back down another footpath. When you reached the footpath, you could not actually 'access' the shoreline, which is what the advertisement implied. It also stated, there were views of the boats going up and down the Menai Straits. This was not the case, the view was overgrown and there was a small window of opportunity to see the boats.
We did complain on day one to try and resolve the issues. They sent someone around to take a look, the lady they sent had no sense of smell. Nothing was done to rectify the issues. I was travelling with my daughter who is disabled, it was imperative the property was as advertised. Despite recognising the exposed nails, they did not rectify this issue. I chased the issues but still no help. I complained on returning. They were not interested. They carried out another inspection and reported that the property smelt and that there were exposed nails, and some dirt, despite my photographic evidence, they refused to accept the other issues or remedy the issue (as they claim they will on their website).
I issued a claim in the small claims court. They stated that the claim was not with them but the owner. For whom, they had given no details for and who was apparently not interested in accepting fault.
Just before the court case, it was settled by the owner out of court. The owner stated, 'I wish these issues with disability had been flushed out prior to your stay'. I booked what I thought was a clean, smell free, safe, and accessible property - I did not think I had to describe every medical issue or disability we had.
Be careful. They really are not interested in ensuring what they are advertising is actually what you get and do not care once you are in the cottage.
Absolutley excellent
Just returned from a holiday at Bron WyddfaNant Peris, Snowdonia. What a fantastic cottage. Clean, warm (was needed in all that snow) and comfortable. The cottage was well equipped too - always a bonus. There was a problem with the hob whilst we were there and both Menaiholidays and the owner were fantastic and had it sorted in a few hours. I must admit having read some of the reviews before booking we were apprehensive but we needn't have worried.
Owners of 'Ty Capel'…
We're the owners of 'Ty Capel' mentioned by another Trustpilot reviewer below. To begin with, we no longer work with Menai Cottages (our choice - not theirs - and purely down to being ready to 'go it alone') but we NEVER had an issue of this nature whilst working with them (in over four years), and I trust their inspection team implicitly. Yes - an official inspection was done by Menai Cottages...one where Mr Simpson was found to be making things up and/or exaggerating wildly!
We now advertise on TripAdvisor and Airbnb by the way - where we have near-perfect reviews and 5*/ 'Super host' status - for all 3 of our properties - so, if you want a proper idea of what people think about us and our rentals, look on those sites instead.
Mr Simpson's holiday also cost him around £65 per night (less than most hotels) - so he possibly needs a reality check too.
Just to be clear, this guy came to stay whilst we were away ourselves, but a trusted friend was doing the cleaning and 'change-overs' for us - as well as staying in our own home (which is right next door to Ty Capel). None of the other guests she cleaned for complained, in fact they left lovely comments about her in our 'guest' books. Also, let me reiterate, we've NEVER had a complaint about cleanliness before or since - even though we've been renting our holiday properties for well over 5 years now.
It might also interest you to know that Mr Simpson was offered both an 'inspection' by Menai Cottages whilst he was still in the property, as well as a 'deep clean' by someone Menai Cottages offered to send out (even before they'd inspected it) - but, on both counts, they were (rudely) turned down. He also turned down our friend's offers of help - choosing to shout at her instead.
Yet, when the Menai team DID get to inspect the cottage (a day after he'd gone - because, as I say, he point-blank refused to have one while he was still there) they found NOTHING WHATSOEVER to warrant a full-refund. Incidentally, our friend didn't even know the guests had left, or that the Menai team were on the way - so, even though she wouldn't have done so anyway, she had no time to do a 'cover-up cleaning job'.
This man was EXTREMELY rude to our friend, rude to the Menai Cottages team, and rude to me by letter as well. Apparently his wife barely said a word though, just stood about looking tearful. We'll leave it for you to decide what her problem was, but don't believe it was the cottage...
Mr Simpson even referred (rudely) to what he thought was our religion in his correspondence (!), taking his inspiration from the odd Buddha ornament in our garden we presume (!!) - and the only reason I mentioned Cuba (where I lived for years) was to show his silly 'first-world' problems in the light they deserved.
Yes, his complaints were just laughable - with the photos he sent (as proof) showing a minute amount of dust on 2 ornaments, as well as 1 hair on some linen! Now, I'm not being funny, but would that make YOU walk out of a seaside cottage - especially as he was here during the glorious heat-wave we had this summer - or make you think you deserved a full refund?
His other problem was a 'smattering' of tiny rust marks on the OUTSIDE of the fridge. Firstly, we live a 10 minute walk from the sea, and, as anyone with any sense knows, the damp & salty air makes things rust a lot quicker here - plus, if we replaced a fridge (or any other appliance) every time this happens, we wouldn't be in business! Secondly, my husband sorted it out (within an hour) by sanding it back, then undercoating and painting with rust resistant products - something he could easily have done for Mr Simpson during his stay. NB Mr Simpson arrived on the Saturday and we were due home on the Monday...but he'd walked out on the Sunday.
Furthermore, the cottage is decorated in a 'shabby-chic/retro/vintage' style, and quite frankly we just don't think this guy 'got it' at all; confusing our 'deliberately' cute & scruffy 'look' with somewhere dirty. This style is pretty well documented in the world of interior design - plus, the photos and advert description made it clear too. Not liking a type of decor is no reason to complain though, or a reason to behave in this awful way!
Mr Simpson had also been made aware (before he arrived) that we'd be on holiday ourselves during his stay - but to contact us if he needed help with anything. However, the first thing we knew about anything being amiss was a call from Menai Cottages after the guests had already walked out. As I've said to Mr Simpson myself, if he'd have contacted us as advised, we'd happily have paid for them to have a drink or two at the local pub whilst someone gave the place another clean (even though it turns out it wasn't needed) - but, as he didn't bother to keep us in the loop, we were sadly unable to make this offer.
After talking things through with both Menai Cottages, as well as our friend, and having returned home and inspected the place ourselves (yes, we were due back a couple of days after his arrival anyway - so got to see the cottage as he'd left it with our own eyes), we all decided to offer him a 10% refund as a good-will gesture (and to close him down) - but, as I say, he rudely refused it.
As I've stated before, we have stunning on-line reviews, have had no other complains of this nature before or since, and believe Mr Simpson (and others like him), should think very carefully before wring such mean-spirited reviews - ones that unfairly undermine the hard work of people (with hitherto spotless records) trying to make an honest living!
We think it's clear to anyone with all the facts that he's making all this fuss because he didn't get what he wanted (a full refund) - so has decided to stamp his feet and behave like a spoilt-child instead. How dare he try to besmirch us in this unkind and false manner, and how dare he try to get away with lies that could hurt our income and reputation. Menai Cottages are big enough to defend themselves, as well as used to silly people like him - but we're just 2 people trying to run a little business, and who rent out properties other people love. Shame on him!
WARNING Please be careful with MENAI HOLIDAY COTTAGES…
WARNING Please be careful with this company they are keen to take your money, but not keen to give you a refund when something goes wrong, I will be taking them to Court to get satisfaction. I have just retired so we decided to treat ourselves while looking to buy a Static Caravan on Angelsey where we have been going for 35 years.
We spent £2150 for a week at Rhyd Angharad Barns, 2 people to dogs dog friendly. The place its self was very nice but within 20 minutes of our stay the holiday turned into a nightmare. The first problem was a strange smell of damp & sick, we turned on the television and it would not work we also had my computer but the Wifi would not connect, the sales data specified designer seating, I think to die for as we fell into seating hitting the concrete floor with a bad BANG ON THE HEAD and then could not get up without assistance then we let the dogs out on very sharp slate and cut his foot onto the grassed area Then it hit me the garden (Dog friendly) had a 30 foot shear drop at the end of it not properly fenced, so we decide to abort the Holiday as the risks we to high and not fit for purpose. I love my dogs they are my best friends.
We complained to Menai Cottages the next day and did not stay at the property. IT WAS UNSAFE FOR US AND THE DOGS. This place needs a visit from the health & safety executive.
It is a great shame that companies like this just ignore the poor old customers and think they have a given right to take your money AND RUN, BY THE WAY THEY DELETE YOUR FEEFO COMMENTS IF THEY ARE NEGATIVE OR POOR.
Well we were going to Court in late 2018 the documents were completed but it would appear days before they refunded all our money. JUST DONT TRUST THIS OUTFIT. AND DONT TRUST THE SALES DOCUMENTS.
Booked a cottage on the Rhoscolyn estate Anglesey via Menai holidays
Booked a cottage on the Rhoscolyn Estate on Anglesey via Menai holidays for end July 2018. Very disappointed in the poor housekeeping standards. Very poorly equipped with odd bits of cutlery and the smallest of fry pans, A Bath Towel was stained and ripped. Fridge and microwave dirty, sofa old and dirty, garden furniture unbelievably filthy and full of encrusted bird poo. One plug socket faulty. Bins outside fly ridden. Left after a few days as worst property we have ever stayed in. The guest book had comments of items that required attention from months ago. Spoke to Menai holidays to give them a chance to apologise, instead they defended the conditions of the property. I wrote 2 pages in the guest book which I expect will be ripped out. Disappointed at Menai holidays response to my complaint, so wrote to owner, got a blunt and uncaring response from Jack and no apology. Appears to be no interest of guests concerns. I was refunded my £35booking fee as a gesture of goodwill. Menai holidays say you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, but I say Menai make a very lasting bad impression. They only do reviews via feefo so they make it difficult for guests to write anything truthful. Be very wary of this company there are much better holiday let’s out there.
Ty Capel Rhoscolyn
Stayed at Ty Capel holiday cottage in Rhoscolyn - terrible standard of housekeeping. Dirty, hairs everywhere, rusty fridge and dirty rugs.
Menai Holidays and the owner closed ranks and declined compensation (apart from a derisory 10% offer).
Owner advised we should be grateful versus the poor of Cuba ??!! (no honestly, that what she said!) Also that our complaint had ruined THEIR holiday!!
Avoid at all costs
We too have had a very bad experience …
We too have had a very bad experience of this company in June 2017. We booked a cottage in Caernarfon which upon arrival was very dirty, stained bed linen, cobwebs that attached the furniture to the walls especially in the bedrooms, where it was obvious that the furniture had not been moved for cleaning behind and under in years. Active mould was present in the carpet and bed base which stank at night. We complained and were made to feel that we were being overly particular. It was so unpleasant that we didn't stay for our second week and despite securing a partial refund from the owner we received no apology from Menai Holidays at all. Their Senior Management also ignored our photographic evidence and letter detailing the problems and did not even bother to reply to us. Their stance was very much that the contract is with the owner of the property not Menai Holidays. Very unhelpful seeing as they are the ones marketing the properties as "sparkling clean!". Menai Holidays should accept responsibility for what they are selling to their customers. Shame on them.
Stay away!!! TERRIBLE SERVICE!! Terrible unhelpful staff!!
Stay away! Do not book!
Terrible service. We booked to stay in the brynkir tower and menai holidays cancelled our holiday less then a week before we were due to go, leaving us without anywhere to stay. Yes they offered to send us some “other holiday houses” but they were ones that nobody would want to stay in. They were cheap alternatives to what was going to be a memorable holiday.
Cancelled on us less then a week before, during the school holidays this October so all other quirky places were already booked.
The staff were unhelpful and didn’t seem to care that our holiday has been cancelled and our 6 year old son was very upset as he had been looking forward to it for months.
We have booked with Menaiholidays a few times now, and we will certainly not be using them again for our holidays.
Booked this months ago so the whole family has been so excited to go.
I would avoid Menai holidays so you don’t go without a holiday and let down last minute (quite literally) and left in the ditch with nowhere to go on holiday as you’ve spent your money on that place.
They cancelled on us less then a week before we go, and won’t give us a refund within a reasonable time. If we had cancelled the booking we would have to pay a cancellation fee, so why they aren’t acting quickly to give us our refund back is beyond me. We have to wait a few days. So we can’t actually book another holiday as they’ve got our money still.
Terrible service, terrible staff. I would not recommend booking ANY holiday with Menai holidays. AVOID.
Avoid Menai Cottages like the plague!
I've found it very interesting reading the reviews about Menai Holidays on this site. We too have had exactly the same experience both with our cottage and the attitude of ' there is nothing wrong with the cottage and being made to feel like I'm totally out of order complaining.'
Our cottage was Breeze in Rhosneigr so avoid like the plague. The photographs did not give a true representation although the ones I sent to Menai Cottages did. Bag of dirty bedding on arrival in living room. Dìrty filthy, smelly suite, cushions and rug. Manky blinds and window frames. Damp in the bedroom and wee on the wall behind the toilet, to name but a few! Disgusting property and disgusting attitude by Menai Cottages!
We booked with this company after …
We booked with this company after seeing the son of the owner on a BBC programme. Great free advertising. The booking process was great, and I booked two properties in the beautiful Anglesey village of Moelfre, for us and a group of friends. We had a cottage called Charter for the two of us and our two dogs, at a cost of £720 for a week in September 2017. The cottage is in a beautiful location but the internal spec no where near meets the outside view. Damp, old, tired with dog faeces from a neighbouring dog on the patio outside. We complained to the company who sent two managers to investigate. The operations manager, Marian, was dismissive and defensive and told us we were being over the top. I wrote the the owner of the business who was similarly dismissive, despite us sending photographs of the condition of the property. In hindsight there were a couple of red flags. Neither the company or their properties are registered for reviews on Trip Advisor - clearly because they don't have the confidence in their properties or business to risk the reviews. Also the visitor book had large gaping holes, where either people couldn't be bothered to leave a review or they were so bad they had been ripped out.
My advise to avoid this company like the plague and definitely avoid Charter Cottage in Moelfre, unless you like staying in damp, uncomfortable cottages. A measure of a company is how they deal with problems and on this occasion they failed miserably
Disappointing Experience
In the past 25+ years we have stayed in numerous holiday cottages all over the UK in the and this is the first time we have felt the need to complain. We recently (April 2016) stayed in one of this company's properties on Anglesey. We had numerous problems including the cleanliness, state of repair and general lack of care of the cottage. Upon complaining to the company we were constantly referred to the owner as our contract was with them, but we felt the company should have taken some responsibility. Instead we were made to feel overly fussy and complaining. I was told that no-one else had complained, which I now know to be untrue. We were offered a small amount of compensation, which we accepted, and a discount off a further holiday which we declined. Like another reviewer, I get the impression that the company post only positive reviews on their website.
Beautiful Cottage
We stayed in a beautiful cottage on the Llyn peninsular booked through Menai Holidays. Dealings with them over the phone or through the website were very easy. I particularly like the fact that you can reserve your booking for 24 hours before having to pay for it.
Menaiholidays.co.uk
We were very disappointed in the property we stayed in on the Island of Anglesey. The photos on their website did not show the reality of this house. The house was very shabby and dirty and in dire need of refurbishment. We complained to the company but their attitude was very unprofessional and they would not admit to the failings of the house. We have been unable to find any independent reviews of this company and their properties. The only reviews are those on their own website, which, surprise surprise are all positive and complimentary.
