Overall we had a great time on our holiday. It was very disappointing that we couldn't travel on the Brocken railway and also that our Rhine cruise was cut short because of the river level. The hotels used were very good especially the one at Assmannshausen.
Unfortunately the holiday did not match the itinerary. Several railways were not operating including the highlight of the trip up the Brocken railway.. Our free day was on a Sunday , no shops open. But the train ran on the Sunday, we could have enjoyed more life in town on the Saturday. Low water in the Rhine curtailed a river trip, but we spent more than an hour travelling along the river in the coach to find a ferry to take us across. The ferry that refused the coach had not accepted coaches since July. Our holiday was in September. BBut our tour manager Julie was brilliant!
The trip was wonderful and exceeded our expectations. Although we were disappointed about one of the trains not running and one of the cruises being cancelled, our guide Julie ensured that she added additional experiences, which more than made up for these. The hotels were very clean and comfortable with helpful staff. We enjoyed the facilities of the more modern hotels but loved the traditional one in the Rhine Gorge. Breakfasts and dinners at the hotels included a good range of dishes and Julie recommended local restaurants for our free evenings. First class travel on the trains ensured comfortable journeys. It was so relaxing to be served at our seats. Thank you so much to Julie for her part in a wonderful trip.
Enjoyed the comgortable rail travel, historic towns in the Harz, the Rhine hoege and the family-owned hotel in Assmannshausen. Congenial company.
Too many changes to the original itinerary, too many coach journeys - not always researched properly and causing additional delays and unnecessary coach journeys instead of the boat trips on the Rhine, as the level is too low. Free days when all the shops are closed ! Second class food in some hotels. Having to act as support and porter to older travellers in the party ! Hours on a steam train looking at dead trees and an alternative trip to a railway carriage museum and a monument to the dead trees and bark beetle. This was honestly the very worst experience of a holiday trip in living adult memory. I cannot recommend this particular trip.
This is the second time I have done this review. Very good trip. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Tom worked tirelessly for us. Unfortunately he had some difficulty with some members of the group. He was superb.
Germany's best kept secret. So pleased that Great Rail Journeys made it possible to visit.
Poor trip planning. Every event seemed a surprise - more a rail replacement coach service. Wernigerode hotel was large and impersonal- more like an airport hotel. Assmannshausen hotel was a quaint 2 star at best. When you’re paying 4 star prices to have very basic room and a very restricted menu of kiddy food is unacceptable. The roadworks to replace a water main started at 6:30am and were splitting all day. Again a “surprise” even though they had been going for a month. On a guided tour the expectation is that you will be catered for but this wasn’t the case. Shame it was do poorly planned as eastern Germany is a fascinating area.
Excellent tour guide, but quality of food at hotels, especially dinner, were below expectations, compared to the cost of the holiday. The excursions were good.
Arrangements were a bit shambolic , with several train delays, long wait times at Stations and several replacement buses. Choice of stop overs poor with little by way of facilities in some locations. Recommendations of restaurants poor , with surly,rude staff . Over an hour for order to be taken on 1 occasion. As returning customers of GRJ we were disappointed and probably won't be back
A great trip to an interesting part of Germany that doesn’t see many UK visitors. First class travel throughout was much appreciated. A very good tour manager who didn’t treat us like children! All in all highly recommended.
Excellent well organised
Good, but too many rail alterations and cancellations. Too much travel by coach. Hotels not air-conditioned in searing heatwave, so poor sleeping.
Excellent group
Appreciated all the organisation and bookings done for us. Good blend of railways and visits to interesting towns. The Rhine Cruise was very enjoyable. There was a fair amount of coach travel and both steam experiences were on consecutive days when they could have been split. Accommodation was of a good standard. Opportunities on rest days could be better communicated.
An enjoyable holiday, with a great tour guide. Felt Assmanshausen as the Rhine base probably wasn't the best choice as very little there especially as chair lift not in use, Rudeshime would have been better.
I enjoyed the holiday, both hotels were good. The only criticism is our first free day was on a Sunday and only a few shops open and because we had trips leaving before they opened and closed before we got back. But everything else was great.
Second hotel and village it was situated in was not very good.for me
The Harz Mountains and Rhine Gorge is one of the best holidays we’ve ever had. It was so varied. The trips on Eurostar and on the other trains in first class were fabulous. The hotels used were all really good, comfortable rooms, great food and good staff. We were pleased to experience the included trips and also some recommendations for our free time. We were well looked after by Elizabeth, our tour manager, and because of her thoroughly good and in depth notes we were able to have the absolute best time on our holiday. We met some lovely fellow passengers and look forward to going on another Great Rail Journeys holiday in the future.
