Exceptional Grow Lights and Top-Notch Customer Service

I received the Sun Shelf with three light levels as a birthday gift from my husband about a year ago, and I couldn't be happier with it. For the price, this full-spectrum grow light system is absolutely worth it—it works like a charm! I've seen incredible growth in all my plants since using the shelf. The ability to adjust the brightness on each shelf makes it incredibly customizable, which is a great feature.

One of my favorite aspects is the automatic system that allows the lights to turn on and off according to the set schedule. It’s a convenient touch that makes plant care even easier. When the light panel controller stopped working, my husband contacted their customer service, and they replaced the controller immediately, free of charge. Their prompt and hassle-free service really impressed me.

Recently, I had the chance to try out their newest product, the Sun Bulb, and once again, I’m blown away by the quality. The bulb is well-crafted and feels high-end. My plant propagations are thriving under this new grow light, growing at a healthy pace.

Overall, I highly recommend these products to any plant lover. They deliver excellent quality and exceptional customer service!

Really glad to hear that you feel the sun shelf was great value and has great adjustability! We've put a lot of work into the Sun shelf to make it a unique product with some great features!

Faults do occur - and we've deliberately made our sun shelf modular so that when things break (as in the case of your controller) we can easily replace them and get your product up and running in no time!

Glad to hear you love the sun bulb too - its fast becoming a crowd favourite!

3 Sun Shelf

When considering a plant shelf to accommodate my growing collection I wanted both a full spectrum light system and a limited amount of bulky wires. This was a perfect option. Before purchase my plan was to remove a shelf and use 2 of the lights to allow for my taller alocasias. When the shelf arrived I decided I wanted the sun shelf 3 and upon contacting Gathera were very helpful and I received an additional set of lights within a few days to complete the unit. For the higher price tag I was sceptical but the quality of the shelves are great and the magnetic system for the LED light to attach to is very clever and more seamless them having screws or clips. I would say it is definitely a shelf that will last and will fit with any changing room over time, would highly recommend.

Do not honour their own T&Cs for replacement of faulty products

Gathera (previously called Urban Plant Growers), are not a UK company, but they have a UK website and sell their hydroponic growing products to UK customers. (Gathera.co.uk)

However, if a product you've purchased from Gathera is faulty, you are on your own. They do not honour the process for return and replacement of faulty items/parts, despite what they say on their own website.

I purchased a Terragarden from Gathera in December 2023. In April 2024 the internal water pump failed.
I emailed Gathera, and Tamara (their support contact) emailed me with instructions on how to dismantle and clean the pump.

I duly followed these instructions, and sent photos to prove I had done so. (This entailed me having to borrow the correct screwdriver head for the job).

But the pump still doesn't work. It is clearly an electrical fault and the only way to resolve the problem is for Gathera to supply a replacement pump.
A submersible pump is an important part of the hydroponic growing process, but it's not a particularly expensive item, so a replacement should not be a big deal for the retailer.

However, Gathera have stopped responding to my emails asking for details of how I can send the faulty part back to them for replacement (as per the instructions on their website covering faulty items).

This company are based in Australia. It's become obvious that they source their products from China (not a problem, many companies do this), and have a consignment shipped to the UK.
Despatch to UK buyers is probably through some sort of UK based fulfilment centre, whose purpose is only to pack and post purchases, not to deal with faulty items, replacements etc.

So , the bottom line is, Gathera.co.uk is more than happy to take your money through their website, but is not interested in fulfilling their own after sales customer service obligations.

Thank you so much for your feedback.

I understand it has been a few months now, but if this query is still not solved I'd be happy to offer a full refund or replacement.

We acknowlegde that our customer service practices have been poor in the UK over the last year, and have recently been working hard to transform the customer service culture of the company to promote more customers successfully growing plants and not having to worry so much about little faults slowing them down.

You correctly pointed out that we are an Australian company. We design in Australia, manufacture in China, and then ship from our Bristol warehouse. We have one staff member in the UK who is mostly in charge of warehousing and inventory. In the past we have had to send replacement parts for faulty items from Australia - as our main business is here.

We have done a few things to improve this:
1. We have redesigned our range to all use common components which are easier to replace for free, and make the life cycle sustainability of the range better altogether.
2. Have setup a framework for customer service prioritising customer happiness, to give staff total freedom to offer refunds/repalcements at their discretion based on individual circumstances.
3. The founders Peter and Dilhan are much more involved in customer service now, checking queries daily and taking on escalations much sooner in the process.

As a side note, in terms of the rebrand, we did it because customers didnt want a tech product that grows food - but rather a gardening product that uses tech. Urban Plant Growers had a tech vibe, and a long name, whereas gathera is shorter, and the look and feel is more organic. We've spent 20 months now in deep RND territory, trying to improve our products and build them in line with the these beliefs. Our company name and legal status has always remained the same Urban Plant Growers Ltd.

Awful company

Awful company. First of all they do not provide any technical specifications at all for their lighting system. They just say its a "high efficiency grow light" without actuslly prividing any evidence of this at all. All i wanted to know is: The PAR output, are they full spectrum, which LED diodes are they using, and which drivers they are using to run their lights. This is very basic information that should be provided, but Gathera have refused point blank to give me any information at all which is extremely suspicious and suggests that their grow light is not high efficiency at all or they would be happy to prove it. Can you think of a single other grow light company thst doesnt provide this information? I asked if they could please send me the specifications, and asked how these lights compare to similar products on the market, but they have avoided answering any of my questions. They are slow to respond to emails, and so their absolute least to help you when you eventually get a reply. Its a shame because I was very excited when I saw this product, but the awful customer service snd the complete lack of basic technical specifications has put me off every buying anything from this company. Having read comments on facebook it looks like I wouldn't have received my sun shelf anytime soon if I did order one, so I feel like I've dodged a bullet here. Avoid this company and get something from a reputable company that will be happy to share basic technical specs of their products

Thank you for the feedback, I'm really sorry you had this experience and did not end up buying one of our products as we did not make the light specs available. I’m not too sure why you didn’t receive them from our customer service team at the time, but they are now on the website under the specifications tab. Gathera’s mission is to create a greener tomorrow, we do this by building products that enable anyone to have access to a garden. The Sun Shelf range is about combining hydroponics with nice furniture designs, something someone wants in their living room. If you are comparing our grow lights to those used for cannabis which use 5x the energy, then you are likely to see better results there at the expense of operating cost. The Sun Shelf lights are more than suitable for growing herbs, leafy greens, house plants and small veggies (I’m currently growing micro tomatoes and strawberries on mine).

The sun shelf launched into the UK market last year, and we sold out in a month. So we did another manufacturing run of 200 units, once the production run was complete and in a container, we put the product up for pre-order in the UK.

When we put products on pre-order they are clearly marked as pre-order, we only do it after production when the products are on a ship. We also provided an estimated arrival and update customers, although UK shipping ended up taking 8 weeks rather than the estimated 6 weeks due to pirates in the horn of Africa at the time. Once the product arrived, everything was sent out within a week - which you can see from our 5 star product reviews.

Overall I am really sorry for your experience and that you did not get the information you were seeking. We’ll be sure to post light specs in an easily accessible place for all new products, thank you for the feedback and for bringing this to my attention.

My experience with that place is surreal for UK standards.

First of all, they were previously known with a different name, UrbanPlantGrowers.com. They changed it for some reason, that I can only attribute to have a terrible customer service and they wanted a clean start.

They are NOT in the UK, they are based in Australia.

They products are made in China and when you get your hands on it they feel cheap and raise concerns about safety.

We bought a triple light, and one of the reasons we choose them was they offered a 12 months guarantee. Yeah, right!

Half way through the warranty the light stop functioning. So we made contact, obviously through emails, because who calls Australia from UK for a set of cheap lights.

They started replying in a very slow manner, like China sellers do on eBay and Amazon, asking photos and videos of the switch being pressed to prove it doesnt turn on. This is a tactic those sellers use to slow the procedure and make you give up, particularly if you dont know how to send a video by email, due to it large size.

So when they asked for a video ( again 1:30 in the night), we did sent the video through WeTransfer.

This time they replied on the sand said, they could not open the video. At this point i realised I was dealing with scammers. They could not open a MOV video made with an IPhone?

They then started saying "make sure you press the on button" or "use another usb power source" as if we were kids. This is a disgusting behaviour all such sellers use to slow the process and deter buyers claiming warranty.

I then replied on the spot, with the video converted to mp4 and told them i was waiting (2 am in the night in UK) for theyr reply.

They did not reply for an hour, when they were replying on the spot as they did not expect i was awake.

I told them to provide a satisfactory resolution to the problem by the next morning or i would take it with my bank.

They disappeared.

Stay away from those people, they are not trading on UK standards, my experience proved they do not honour warranty.

They certainly have their products in China as many sellers do, so they dont have control on quality or replacements.

AVOID.

Thank you for the feedback, we're so sorry that you have experienced this and apologize for late reply, we have only just checked Trustpilot and previously did not monitor this platform. I’ll try to address some of these things one at a time.

Yes we did a rebrand, we have been around since 2018 and started operating in the UK in 2020 – in 2022 we started redesigning our entire product range and wanted to reflect the vibe that we were trying to create with our new range which you can start to see with our sprouthouse and heirloom planter (green, organic vibes, curves, very natural looking). We also wanted to create more of a barrier in terms of the name as other companies were popping up using the word ‘urban’, so we landed on Gathera mid-2023.

Customer service and marketing is based In Australia, but we have a warehouse in Bristol which sends out orders daily (average fulfilment time is 20 hours currently).

Yes our products are manufactured in China. China manufactures 85% of all LED lights in the world, and their quality when it comes to electronics is generally exceptional. As the co-founder of Gathera, I was personally in China for a month in 2023 overseeing some production runs and building relationships. – we also have audits on everything that we produce before accepting them from the factory.

We do have replacements in the UK for goods and we do provide a warranty, usually, the process is a video of what the issue is and a couple trouble troubleshooting techniques then depending on the product, either sent back for repairs or replaced on the spot. This is because we've built a business around products that we've sold for years - and know well enough to understand that some problems can easily be fixed. As an enviro conscious company its also imperative that we try to fix a product before simply replacing it.

Having looked into your particular case, your grow light should have been replaced on the spot after the video of the fault and tested with an adapter. Our customer service rep could have replaced the adapter if that was the fault.

I have passed on your feedback as this should have been resolved quicker, and we have made some changes to the way we do customer service to incentivise our customer service staff to prioritise customer success as a number one priority.

Apologies for this experience, if you are still interested we would be happy to refund or replace the faulty item.
