Dettagli del prodotto
A man and a boy push a cart piled with their worldly possessions through the scorched ruins of post-apocalyptic America. Emaciated, filthy and exhausted, the pair makes painfully slow but determined progress along the road that will ultimately lead to the sea and the hope of salvation. One of the most requested books in Folio reader surveys, Cormac McCarthy’s The Road is a beautiful, harrowing and mesmerising account of the most horrific of scenarios. It earned McCarthy the Pulitzer Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and was adapted into a critically acclaimed film. This much-anticipated new collector’s edition includes Folio author Michael Chabon’s illuminating review-essay, first published in the New York Review of Books, as well as the artwork of award-winning artist Gérard DuBois, who captures the beauty and brutality of McCarthy’s vision in breathtaking colour illustrations. Winner of the Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year Prize and the Book Illustration category at the V&A Illustration Awards 2022. ‘My job is to take care of you. I was appointed to do that by God. I will kill anyone who touches you. Do you understand?’

I was always surprised that no one gave McCarthy the luxury book treatment that his work is deserves. So of course I was thrilled when I saw Folio’s edition of The Road. The illustrations by DuBois are stark and beautiful, capturing every moment from the novel I hoped would be illustrated. If Folio turns their skill toward the rest of McCarthy’s novels I’d buy them in a heartbeat based on the incredible work that went into The Road.

At last! I am delighted to finally have this book in a Folio edition. Overall, I think they've achieved a fine result. The illustrations are superbly atmospheric - in light of the subject matter it would have been too easy to have defaulted to a monochromatic pallet. The images have a grim and grimy atmosphere that I find compelling - achieved in muted colour. Ideally, I would like to have seen a larger format - this edition shares the same proportions as The Drowned World. This makes for a light and comfortable read but there's still a nagging there for a more 'substantial' book. Paper: it's the more common 'wove' - I'd have preferred 'pure rough' - "I Am Legend" has this paper and I feel benefits as a result. There is a strong ink smell when first unwrapped but that is fading in the short time I've had this book. If Folio could produce this in a larger format, limited and maybe signed - I'd bite their hand off! Now, I'll just hang in there for "Earth Abides" - I'm all about cheery reads!

I knew it would not be the most cheerful book I have ever read and it wasn't. Spare, honed prose. An interesting afterword by Michael Chabon. Illustrations very appropriate.
