Poor communication, paid upfront, and the repair didn't work
I brought my laptop in for repeated black-screen crashes during gaming. Before going to a shop, I'd already updated and done a clean reinstall of the GPU drivers myself and tried adjusting GPU clock settings, so I went in fairly confident it wasn't a simple software issue. I was told the problem was "GPU" related, but not given a specific diagnosis or an explanation of what work would actually be carried out. I paid £350 upfront, having initially been quoted £395, and was given a three-day turnaround.
Three days later I'd heard nothing, so I started calling for an update. I made six calls that day: two were answered and I was told to call back later, four went to voicemail. On a seventh call I was told the laptop would be ready the next day at 5pm. After I pushed back on the delay in writing, I was told instead to come at 1-2pm, as the GPU needed time to cool down after the work. I went to the shop when it opened at around 10am regardless, and the laptop was ready and waiting.
At no point, either at collection or afterwards, was I given a clear diagnosis or a description of the work performed, despite asking repeatedly. The receipt simply read "VGA. Repair". I left not knowing what the original fault had actually been, what work had been done, whether it was a hardware or software fix, or what, if anything, had been replaced.
The same black-screen fault happened again as soon as I used the laptop normally, which I documented on video. When I raised this, I was told the laptop needed to come back in for a 24-hour test before a refund could be considered. In writing, I was told: "Laptop needs to come in for check for 24 hours if it's not working then refund will be done no problem." I agreed and dropped it back off. Before returning it I was told: "As soon as you bring it, we will put it through some tests. Tomorrow we will have the results. And if the result shows that it fails we can issue the refund straight away."
After roughly 24 hours I asked if it was ready and was told it was. There was no explanation of the test results beforehand. At collection I was told the test had failed, still without any detail on what had been tested, what the result actually showed, or what the original fault had been. I was given a full cash refund of £350 on the spot.
To be fair, the refund was honoured in full and without a fight once the second test failed, and I want that to be clear, since it's an important part of what happened. But across two visits and a fair amount of chasing on my part, I was never given a diagnosis, a breakdown of the work carried out, or an explanation of what any of the testing actually involved, and the original fault was never resolved. I'd think carefully before using this service, and if you do, I'd push for a written diagnosis and an itemised description of the work before paying anything upfront.
