Overall fairly happy

Overall fairly happy - it has cheaply allowed me to ship from UK to the EU - communication can be a bit slow but the actual process is quite streamlined so you don't really need to talk to anyone. Quick set up, it remits the info, then you get billed once a month - pretty straight forward and it does work.

Bad, expensive ongoing experience (UK small business)

We are a small UK business who was looking to sell its merch internationally. After researching we found EAS would link with Shopify and handle EU taxes. I was nervous about signing on, but Teemu was very friendly and plausible in our initial call.

My interpretation is as follows:

- We were assured this was a rolling agreement, cancel at any time, where we pay only for sales. In reality there are monthly ongoing charges.

- Cancellation took weeks to action after I was in touch due to my store closing temporarily. Four months on we are still being invoiced - it is very unclear what the charges are for and when they will end.

- If you question the charges with support you are met with a stern response about tax liabilities and penalties from all 27 member states and then sent more invoices.

- There are charges for conversion and "late" payments (which come quickly), given payment of the invoice is via card charges which are passed on to you. There is no direct debit, automatic payment, or convenient way to pay the invoices without paying extra fees on top.

- We are continually bombarded with invoices and duplicate invoices with extra charges almost weekly, making things impossible to track. It is unclear what the invoices are for, several months after beginning the process of trying to cancel.

- Support seems to have an answer for everything - and the answer always seems to involve continuing to pay them.

Practically this was a totally opaque and expensive (and ongoing!) experience - not, in my view, a good road to go down for a small UK business selling to EU.

Thank you for sharing your feedback.

We are sorry to hear about your experience, and even more so that we did not provide the exceptional service we usually pride ourselves on delivering. We sincerely apologise for the frustration and inconvenience caused.

Regarding the reporting and cancellation process, due to EU regulations, once an IOSS number is cancelled, we are required to continue reporting for two full months after that date. This protects merchants from significant penalties, which can include fines and a full ban from the IOSS system for two years.

We have reviewed our communication in your case. While there may be room for improvement, we have been clear about the consequences of non‑reporting and the related fees. The fees mentioned are late payment fees, applied because we did not receive payments for almost two months. As the intermediary, we are co‑responsible for the taxes and must pay the authorities on the merchant’s behalf. These fees cover the interest on unpaid taxes and the penalties we incur while financing the tax debts.

For invoicing fees, we also offer bank transfer as a payment method, where these fees do not apply.

We appreciate your comments and will continue to refine our communication so all obligations and payment options are as clear as possible.
