Free in-home sharpening is a myth—expect to pay for shipping or get ghosted

Title: Free in-home sharpening is a myth—expect to pay for shipping or get ghosted
Rating: 2 / 5
The "Forever Guarantee" and free sharpening are huge selling points for Cutco, but the reality of getting your knives serviced is incredibly frustrating.
I own several Cutco knives and tried to utilize their in-home sharpening service. I called the provided number and left a voicemail as requested. Two days later, having received no reply, I called again and sent a text message following their automated instructions. Still, I heard nothing. I finally called corporate customer service, and they gave me a different local representative's phone number. After several attempts, I finally managed to schedule an appointment for her to come to my house. On the day of the appointment, she completely no-showed and never called. I texted her to follow up and received absolutely no response.
The promise of easy local sharpening feels like a ruse. If you can’t get a representative to show up, your only options are to pay out-of-pocket to ship your knives back and forth to the factory every single time they get dull, or drive to their only Texas retail storefront in Houston—which is completely impractical for most people in a state this size.
Cutco needs to do better. Do not buy these knives thinking you will get hassle-free, complimentary local service. It is a major selling point that they simply do not deliver on.

Paid for sharpening and postage & Sent…

Paid for sharpening and postage & Sent several knives in for sharpening . Got them back, didn't seem sharper at all. Few weeks later had rep come to my house after hearing my story. He sharpened and said several times they were definitely not sharpened at the factory. 2 years since they are wore down & dull. They're return & sharpening cost is outrageous for the cost of their products. Won't be much left for teeth on my smaller knives but I question their replacement because these should have been replaced (or sharpened) the 1st time I returned them .

Cutco

Supposed to be “outrageously sharp”

Knife is supposed to be “outrageously sharp” but straight out of the box I ran my finger alone the edge and it couldn’t nick out. So paper test results even worse paper folder over and crumpled 9/10 times
Cheap Chinese quality. Do not waste your money.

Just had our knives sharpened after 25+…

Just had our knives sharpened after 25+ years of daily use. Cutco replaced 8 out of 11 knives sent for sharpening. Turnaround time was less than two weeks. All aspects of their product service and warranty exceeded of expectations. I am a second generation Cutco purchaser. Our family has been Cutco loyal since 1972. I even have a scar rom 1972 to prove how sharp Cutco can be. Anyone considering them I would highly reccomend.

Just don’t buy them

Just don’t buy them! After two years they need sharpening and I have to do it every month. You have to pay to return them to Cutco in London, Ontario if you’re from Canada.

The worst part is I called the customer service line got an agent that said they would send a free shipping label so I could send it directly back to the factory in USA. So waited over a week no label, I called and asked where the label was and they have no record of my account! The lady had NO customer service and said that I’d have to pay! I will just return them at Costco, I’ll never support this company again.

Ruined anniversary

I recently purchased the homemaker ultimate upgradable set. This was almost a 2,500 dollar purchase. I bought this for my wife for our 15 year anniversary. I even got the block engraved. Package was delivered just in time, right before my wife came home from work on the day of our anniversary. The box was gift wrapped and looked perfect as my wife started to open it. Long story short... the set was missing all 10 crucial knives. What came in the box was the block, cutting board, sharpener, and the 8 steak knives. No chef knife, butcher, forks, bread, pairing.. etc. I spent way too much money to have an incomplete set and it completely ruined my anniversary night and put stress on my wife. I called customer service and the quickness they could get the knives to me was by the end of the week on Friday(I called Tuesday). Knives didn't show up till the following Monday. When the rest of the knives finally showed, I was happy again that I would be able to place them all into the block and show my wife. Disappointment once again followed as I opened the box and counted only 9 out of the 10 knives I was supposed to receive. On top of it, the main knife used to cook with was missing. The chef knife. I called again and was able to get the missing knife sent to me by Wednesday. All the company did for me to compensate was the longer pairing knife and two extra steak knives. I've ALWAYS wanted Cutco and knew of the quality and their reputation. However, this experience has put a very bad taste in my mouth to the point where I was close to sending it all back.

I have been using Cutco knives every…day since 1984

I have been using Cutco knives every day since 1984. They seriously are something that is well worth every penny spent on. Their customer service is exceptional. They stand behind everything that they say. And they are guaranteed for life and they sharpen them for free. The store manager, Rachael Reyes st the Bee Caves Rd location in Austin is exceptional with Customer service. She treats you like family from the minute you walk in the door. She’s definitely an asset to Cutco and I’ll give you the best service and treat you like family. Highly recommend Cutco.

Cutco - 25 Years Later.

I had a girlfriend and her sister sold Cutco Knives...
I had a house in Calgary and one in the Okanagan and thought I'd give it a try...

Mostly because of the relationship but also because the product looked like a quality offering.

Well, I can tell you that the Cutco knives lasted much longer than the relationship...

Fast forward, 20 years...

I had a tip off of the big knife while chipping some ice and somehow a very small tip broke off.

I always knew about the "lifetime guarantee" but never took the time or effort to actually send in my knives for a sharpening and a request to fix the tip of the knife.

Anyway, I always meant to write a positive review but never did (shame on me)...

Anyway, in my 62 years of life...I've rarely recommended any product or company BUT today I decided to finally write a review...

Yes, I paid for a quality product BUT the delivered when I asked for service.

I can now sleep better...

Knives are good; Don't buy cookware unless you plan to keep it!

Though we have enjoyed the knives with their warranty, we purchased the cookware thru a local rep (that was very honest and helpful) and were told we could try it and send it back for a full refund within 30 days. We really wanted to like it, but it took too much work and concern about how various things were cooked on it, etc. So we decided we needed to return the set. I tried to contact our rep but found he was out doing shows and not available. Went to Cutco site for customer service and noted they said it was a 15 day return and we were on day 13, so I asked how to return. We understood we have to pay, but did NOT understand that it would cost us $154.62 at the least expensive reputable company. I specifically asked if it would be less expensive thru our local rep and was told NO...had to go thru this process and pay that amount. So we did in order to meet the return deadline. I finally got a response from my local rep and he said he would get a return shipping label for $17!!! I contacted Cutco for a refund since their service line gave me the wrong answer, but they won't do anything except tell me I should have gone thru my local rep. I have the email to prove I tried and would have missed the deadline, but no give whatsoever or owning of the mistake. I'm saddened by the poor customer service experience and just warn everyone NOT to purchase the cookware unless you are certain you would not return it!

Scummy Practices and Pressure Sales

My husband and I were given a sales pitch via Skype by a family member we didn't even know because they wanted to "practice". They got a hold of us through a different family member. Apparently training was paid and it was only supposed to take about an hour or so. We understood that it was supposed to go to their college fund and were willing to give them the time.
The presentation was a mixture of slideshows and live demonstration. I have to say I was pretty impressed when they cut a penny in half with the scissors.
What I was not impressed with was the pressure sales. It was not actually just practice, they were really trying to sell to us. They told us what other family members had bought, got us to make a wish list, offered amazing deals on the things we "wanted" (but those deals were only available right then), and tried to get 5 referrals out of us.
I surreptitiously did some research while they were presenting and found out that Cutco is an MLM. Their sales model specifically targets young people and they are supposed to only reach out to people that they get direct referrals for, especially family.
I'm fairly immune to pressure sales so I didn't have a hard time saying no, but found out that another family member who is short on cash caved and spent over $600.
From what I understand the knives aren't bad, and the lifetime replacement is probably part of why they are so expensive. However, having a couple of good knives already, I didn't really buy it.
I was also really unimpressed with some of the script they were going off of and the way the company targets family members to try and guilt people into buying. Save your money and get a good knife elsewhere.

Cutco cant cut it

If you like spending alot of money on a sub par product then cutco is the way to go . I spent over $1200.00 on a full kitchen knife set . They dulled quickly ( with in month of owning) and then cutco asks you to send them the knives for up to a month so they can sharpen them...rediculous . I then found out that these are stamped knives and not forged which would explain the cheap blade quality. Over rated over priced products, I use a $5.00 peeler purchased from Safeway that's better than theirs. The larger chopping knives just cant handle daily use. Much better options out there for way less.

So far, everything my mother said they would be.

Cutco 1764, 3721, 4120, 77KU, and by far my absolute favorite 1766. Pricey to say the least and if you want finger parts in your salad, these will definitely do the trick. The handles seem really dated but fit perfectly in your hand with all models. I got the sheaths with mine except for the paring knife and would definitely recommend doing the same if you have the option You can definitely get an equivalent set of shears (or a dozen) that will do the same job but the set matches very nicely together. We have been very happy so far with this purchase.

Lifetime knives

Lifetime knives. It’s an investment but worth every penny. I have many knives and always go for my cutcos first. Literally had one of my cutco knives melt in the dishwasher and they replaced it. Amazing.

Complete sham marketing

Complete sham marketing. Overpriced knives. I was a part of this industry for too long and I will never purchase Cutco knives or recommend them to anyone ever again.
