Appalling, incompetent, very poor customer service by the staff of the front desk and her colleague who were being absolutely unhelpful. We have witnessed other customers being bullied and conned into buying Bargain Car Rental insurance after being threatened of the accumulative high costs if the car ever gets involved in an incident - even when the customers said they had their own insurance.
They accused us of being argumentative when she and her colleague were being unhelpful and unclear, in aggressive confrontational etiquette, invalidating the fact and twisting the truth, when we were waiting further direction. When we needed to do the transaction using a wifi connection they refused to let us "borrow" their wifi FOR GUEST (2 wifi under the domains of Bargain Car Rental, in which one of them is marked "Guest" - which we ALL KNOW what this is for), so we had to ask another customer who just walked in to borrow his hotspot which he immediately let us access it (we just returned from an overseas traveling and on the stopover in Hobart to spend time with our friends and children).

Upon leaving, the stone-hearted female staff threatened she will announce us to others so we will never be welcome or able to hire any vehicles in the future with a childish smirky face. Well, do we want to return to this company after being mistreated this way and I am sure those 5 customers before us, would NOT either!

Upon sharing the incident with our colleagues and friends, they ALL said, "Ah.. yeah, they're known for that! We stay away from them!" which explained a lot about the low star.
We have hired cars with Bargain Car Rentals as well as with other rental companies in the past.

Easy access, simple pickup and drop off. No problems with the car other than a little sluggish up hills.

The service provided by Bargain both on picking up and dropping off the car was excellent. (February 2026).

Very good, tailored options when making initial booking. Staff very friendly and helpful, clear information given. High standard of vehicle provided at a very good price. Would have liked a Sat Nav fitted, however, this was not a problem for me.

Customer service was good, unfortunately the car which we hired had a noise problem which we reported and were immediately given a replacement vehicle. Pick up and return of vehicles was easy. Overall experience very satisfied with this hire company and good value for money.

I have been a loyal customer of Bargain Car Rentals for more than five years and have always received excellent service across Australia, especially at Hobart Airport. Unfortunately, my recent experience with the Hobart City branch at 173 Harrington Street has been extremely disappointing and has changed my perception of the company.
I was travelling with a group of 15 people and recommended Bargain based on years of positive experiences. We booked three vehicles — two from Hobart Airport and one from the Hobart City branch. On the first day, while driving to Mount Wellington, we discovered that one of the vehicles (U‑HBA‑1727585) was ageing, struggled to accelerate uphill with five passengers, and could not exceed 40 km/h even with full pressure on the accelerator. Another driver in our group also noticed the rear passenger-side wheel spinning abnormally. This raised serious safety concerns, especially as we had several long-distance trips planned.
When I contacted Bargain Customer Service the next day, the representative was professional, understanding, and immediately arranged a replacement vehicle at the Hobart City branch. They also offered a 10% discount on my next booking and a $10 refund for the inconvenience.
However, when I arrived at the Hobart City branch to exchange the vehicle, the customer service experience was unacceptable. After explaining the safety issues, the staff member took the car for a quick drive and insisted that “there is nothing wrong with the car.” He raised his voice at us and said, “Just because you don’t like the car doesn’t mean you can change it. You’re wasting my time.”
We made it clear that this was not about preference but about safety, and that the replacement had already been approved by Bargain’s head office. Despite this, the staff member continued to speak to us in a dismissive and unprofessional manner.
The vehicle was eventually replaced, and the new car drove noticeably better — confirming that our concerns were valid.
This experience was far below the standard I have come to expect from Bargain Car Rentals. The behaviour of the staff member at the Hobart City branch was disrespectful and unnecessary, especially when we were simply following instructions from Bargain’s own customer service team. I hope the company investigates this matter seriously to ensure no other customers experience similar treatment.

Excellent service, almost new car. I've hired cars around the world, this was probably the first time I had one with the Owner's Manual in the glove box! For our dates, much cheaper than an airport pick-up, and the pick-up location is only a few hundred yards from the SkyBus route. Watch the insurance upgrade options though. Get cover elsewhere ahead of pick up -£35 (GBP) for two weeks for us, saved over A$ 250.
