AmeriCamp vs Covid

Throughout covid, I was fully expecting for my plans for go out the window and my dreams of attending an American summer camp would be put on hold. However, I received continuous updates and support and cannot express my gratitude for how helpful the AmeriCamp team was. Over the last few weeks in particular, my main point of contact Laura has been incredibly helpful and genuinely invested in getting me placed in a camp. Looking forward to summer!

So helpful

The whole team is so helpful and my application and interview process has gone so smoothly and i am now placed in a camp for summer 2022 and have had great communication throughout. 100% recommend x

The company itself is brilliant

The company itself is brilliant; what the staff say they'll do, they will do, and they'll be more than willing to help you every step of the way. However, through no fault of theirs, my application had to be terminated, since the external body responsible for checking over health forms did not deem me suitable due to the dosage of my antidepressant medication. Reason cited; they're being super-vigilant this year (due to the ongoing pandemic), and as I also found out, no US embassies anywhere are even offering appointments to those who aren't US nationals.

I can't fault AmeriCamp whatsoever - they even offered to refund me the fees I'd paid (a kind gesture which I wasn't expecting, so that's definitely a plus). Staff very pleasant and likeable. Just a pity that the powers that be C-blocked me from what would've been a rewarding and exhilarating American experience.

Here's hoping I will be more lucky next year.

Jen and Callum

I spoke with Jen and Callum separately on the phone about my application, they went through what I would have to do and how I could complete it, making everything very clear and gave in depth information about the next steps. Not only that, they were both so easy to talk to and very friendly.

No one knows what is going on!

I started my Americamp journey in January 2020 and it is still ongoing. I am just going to write down some of my experiences below.

At first my application was cancelled, I’m still not sure why it happened, I can only guess is that I was talking to a different person each time I had to email asking questions that someone got confused.

I went to a mandatory visa meeting (Spring 2020) and the staff members hosting the meeting were an hour and a half late! It also said on the email that this would be 5 hours long, it was barely 2 hours. Some people came from far away to London for this meeting and we’re annoyed that it was so short, me included. Seems like a waste of my time and money when it could’ve easily been done via zoom (they were setting up an online presentation but we were told you would have to pay £30 to access it).

Last year there was a group chat with staff and customers. It was actually quite useful but as soon as the questions started getting too difficult, without warning they just removed everyone from the group. They could have at least given a heads up or just removed the staff. Made it seem like they didn’t have any answers.

After camp was cancelled for the summer there were no signs of any refunds. I was told that it wasn’t possible although I’m sure some people did, instead they offered you money off another one of their packages or to be transferred to next year. Reading another review, they replied to say that refunds are not possible as the money is used for the application, but how do they make a profit then AND how have other companies given refunds? At least a partial refund would help the people that no longer want to participate. I understand not receiving a refund for my DBS.

Now onto this year...

One of the most annoying things about Americamp is the lack of updates. I haven’t really received any email updates since last year. You’d think that after the four step plan was discussed in the government yesterday they would have an email ready talking about the review of international travel in May.

Along with the updates. According to their Instagram they have been having online job fairs with the camps. I had no idea of this until I looked at their Instagram.

In my opinion this is a poorly led company with staff that don’t have a clue what is going on. I would not recommend Americamp to anyone and wish I had gone with another company. The only good thing about this company is Kyle, who answers emails very quickly and is helpful.

We're really sorry to hear that you haven't had a good experience with the AmeriCamp program. We try to make sure that our applicants have the best time so this is sad for us to see.

We have tried to reach out to you for the past week to talk through where we went wrong in your case. We will talk a bit more about the different points you raise to try and shed some light, but it would be brilliant if you could get back in touch with us so we can sort this out!

For the orientation meeting that you mention, we have to ensure that applicants arrive earlier than the start, so as to make sure that no one misses any of the vital information. We did ask that you set aside 3 hours of your time for the meeting to make sure that we left enough time for questions, sometimes this is shorter and sometimes this is longer depending on the number of applicants who attend. We do apologise that this inconvenienced you, and completely understand that travelling such a distance is frustrating, it was, unfortunately, a visa requirement for the J1 program last year, and therefore essential for the program.

We made the decision to close the applicant group chat last year for the sake of the wellbeing of you and the rest of our applicants. During the height of the COVID restrictions in Spring last year, there was mass panic in the group chat at all hours of the day. We tried to manage this as best we could and get back to all questions, but we, unfortunately, weren't able to man the chat through the night. At these times we would find that we were unable to answer everyone's questions, and instead, these were being answered inaccurately by worried applicants, causing a spiral of panic. We closed the group chat for this reason and replaced it with a regular COVID update bulletin on our website. We also rang through everybody individually on a regular basis to check-in, as well as advising applicants to email in with specific questions to our info account which was manned for 8hrs a day every day (and outside of these hours during peak times).

We are sorry that you feel as though you have not been kept up to date this year. We can see that you have had regular email contact with Kyle. We also have been sending biweekly newsletters with updates on travel and key information for camp. We are constantly trying to find new ways to ensure that our applicants are kept up to date, so we will take this feedback on board!

Job fairs this year have been slightly different from any other year as we have had to run them virtually. Camps have approached us with specific roles that they are looking to fill and we have matched applicants whose skills and experience match best to interview. We wouldn't want to place any of our applicants in a role that wasn't suited to them, this is why we haven't advertised our online fairs and why only certain applicants have attended them. We hope this helps to explain! The vast majority of our hiring is done online, camps review your application and then will get in touch to schedule an interview with you!

We can only apologise that you have not had a good experience with AmeriCamp as we really take pride in our customer service. We try our hardest as a company to make sure that everyone who joins our program has a brilliant time, not just whilst at camp but during the application process too. We would urge you to get back in touch with us so that we can see where we went wrong.

Fab company amazing experience

Always happy to help.

The Americamp team has always been helpful and informative, keeping in touch frequently via email. They are happy to answer any questions you may have and responses are always quick. Kyle has been especially helpful and invited me to the virtual camp fair last week.
It was such an easy process and having a pre-interview room to sort out any technical difficulties and have a bit of a chat put me at ease.
I got placed at Camp Chipinaw! I am very thankful to of had the opportunity to go to the virtual camp fair, and very exited for summer!

I have enjoyed my experience with Americamp to date, they are all so lovely to talk to and so down to earth,
The virtual hiring fair was so easy to work and i felt so welcome and not nervous at all for my interview as i had a pre interview chat which helped alot :)

So helpful and supportive

The whole process for the camp fair was so so helpful. You had an Americamp staff member either side of the interview and made accessing it super simple. After your interview was complete, the Americamp team check everything was all good and asked if you had any questions. This made relaxed and felt like you were being supported through the whole system.

Amazing team!

I attended the AmeriCamp Virtual Fair today and the whole process was stress free! From applying literally 15 days ago, to today, I have completed all the steps and have now been placed at a camp! Thanks to all the AmeriCamp team for their hard work!

Last week I took part in the online camp fair, everyone was extremely helpful and welcoming. The experience was great despite it being all online and I ended up being placed there and then, thanks to all the help and advice I was given throughout my application.
